I’d been looking at cajons as I’ve seen these being used in church, where I play guitar in the band. Also, my nine-year old son has just started drum lessons and we wanted something him to build confidence and his sense of rhythm on. Initially, my son used it in band rehearsal but in the absence of our drummer one week he has stepped in and used it in the service. Also, I’ve been playing on it at home. We’ve had good use of it and I’ve got to say how impressed I am with this instrument. Firstly, it’s worth having a play around with the set up. Although no instructions are included with the cajon, the desertcart web page basically summarises how you can play the cajon and alter the sound of the instrument. I’ve watched a few good YouTube videos and read some useful web pages, but essentially it’s very intuitive. You get a good bass tone straight away from striking the front face in the middle. It’s not as deep as larger cajons I’ve heard being used, but it is a rich tone due to the birch wood construction. The snare sounds can be adjusted by using the Allen key provided. Also, there are velcro strips on the inside to help fasten the guitar strings inside. This seems a thoughtful touch as I’ve seen a couple of YouTube videos say you need to use masking tape to do this. You do need to use a screwdriver to loosen the front face to give a sharper snap, but the screws come fully tightened which seems sensible. In terms of playing, the various different sounds you can get from striking the instrument in different ways and places are all distinct. It’s such an intuitive instrument to play that after a short while you can get a good feel for the sweet spots and different types of strokes. Although this is a smaller cajon, and labelled as a child’s size, it can take a 100 kilo guy sat on it beating it for the best part of an hour. I gave that thing a good working over and didn’t feel worried about damaging it. It’s solid and the sound you get from it is substantial. When my son used it in a service, it cut through the mix of the band nicely, the snare sound especially. We had some really nice comments regarding it, including from people who already have cajons. I'm going to continue taking it for my son, or anyone else, to use. It's so light it's no hassle to take and I've no worries about it taking a few knocks from being transported regularly. It's robust enough and the gig bag really helps make sure. Plus, the strap is long enough so that I can sling the bag over my shoulder whilst carrying my guitar and amp too. It's well padded and fits perfectly. Given the reasonable price of the cajon, it really is a bonus addition to have it included. All in all, I’ve been delighted with my Moukey cajon. It might say that it's a kid's cajon and it certainly is great fun to play, but this isn't a toy. It's a proper instrument for an adult or child.
