This gets a five star even though I returned it.

This book is beautiful, it just wasn’t what I was looking for. But if you love beautiful maps and some history behind them, you’ll love it. It seems like it would be a great coffee table book and a great gift.

Now what I was looking for...

I loved the idea. But wanted it for my map obsessed kids (6 and 8).Even as an adult, I wouldn't want to read that much text....I just want to explore super cool literary maps. So for us, it was a no go. Just too much text, not enough maps! But if you are looking for thick description, then this is for you. No doubt. It is a really beautiful book, thick, and lots of detailed descriptions.Returned item.

A Feast For The Mind And Eye

Maps have been one of my life-long delights. I learned the US states from a puzzle map I was given at age 5, pored over a map of Europe on the cover of one of my third grade notebooks, and always jumped at the chance to read any book that featured maps of real or imagined lands on its end papers. When I had some free time I often doodled maps with elaborate coastlines and rugged mountain ranges. Dr. Huw Lewis-Jones must have had a childhood similar to mine, because in The Writer's Map he has produced a compendium calculated to delight everyone who has ever felt a tingle upon seeing the phrases "Here be dragons" or "Terra Incognita." The Writer's Map is a visual and mental feast. There are twenty five beautifully written essays by such authors as Philip Pullman, Frances Hardinge, Brian Sibley, and Isabel Greenberg, illustrators like Miraphora Mina, Russ Nicholson, and Peter Firmin, and artists whose works cannot be assigned to one medium like Daniel Reeve, the cartographer who produced the maps used in The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. Each essay is sumptuously adorned with maps, ranging from medieval efforts through twentieth century atlases. The most beautiful and appealing of these maps are those produced as part of literary works, primarily though not entirely "children's literature" including works by J.M. Barrie, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien,L. Frank Baum, and Kenneth Grahame. There are beautiful depictions of "Fairyland" from the 1920s as well as detailed examinations of J.K.Rowling's Marauder's Map, G.R.R. Martin's Westeros, and Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea. Every page has something to catch the eye and intrigue the imagination. The Writer's Map is a gem no biblio- and carto-phile can afford to be without.
