Teach Yourself Hindi Complete Course

Amazing book for fast learners or experienced linguists. It doesn't dabble in repetition- take your own time to practice and use the examples and you should be learning Hindi in no time. Make sure not to skip a single word on the page or you'll lose valuable info.The only downside is the book puts the word "यह" (and certain other words) into phonetics in a strange way. It says "yah"- which is technically correct, but it SHOULD be pronounced as "yeh". So, make sure to watch a lot of Hindi films to make sure you've got the correct pronunciation. Other than that, the book has some awesome, real life examples and an interesting masala-mix story.

Teach Yourself Hindi is an excellent value book for self teaching of the Hindi Language. Being only a relatively small book it does give lots of examples or have large numbers of excercises. Also, I suspect the size means that the book cannot be structured to make learning easier. So this book requires a concerted effort to get through. It is important to work through each concept until it is understood.Anyone who does put the effort in this book will give them a comprehensive understanding of the Hindi language. It is however completely unsuitable for somone who wants to learn a few phrases. I highly recomend using this book with the audio CDs as well as other resources that you can get your hads on, from the internet for example, and especially Bollywood movies.

This "Second Edition" of Teach Yourself Hindi is a real improvement over the previous edition. The lessons have been arranged in a more logical manner and the vocabulary is much more up to date. The dialogs are also more current in subject matter. The Grammar is explained in a more concise manner with better examples than the first edition. The Devanagari script is used throughout the book - with the first five lessons being transliterated completely. Which brings us to the only drawback to the book - the script is not covered in any depth. This can be a problem for some beginners. For a more complete study of the writing system the beginner should try the book "Teach Yourself Hindi Script" by the same author. If you get the book with the tapes it is one of the better Hindi resources that is readily available today.

I've kind of burned out on new languages.

Throughout the years I have purchased several Hindi books; this was the first one I ever used and I haven't found one like it. It gives you the right amount of information in each lesson without being overwhelming. The only con is that the vocabulary is scattered all over the lessons, and I would have liked a more organized way to present it.

Great guide providing you have outside help as well. Very detailed oriented and not for the traveler who expects to learn a few phrases to get by. This course requires a lot of work.

This book is very helpful. I like the approach to grammar and dialog.

Delivery within the expected timeline and the item was in decent condition although it was quite dusty.I have not used the DVD yet so I will have to come back to confirm it is all working fine.

Ich empfehle dieses Buch allen, die sich im Selbststudium Hindi beibringen möchten. Die Hörübungen finde ich besonders toll - man hat die Möglichkeit, das Gesprochene in den Pausen direkt zu wiederholen bzw. einen "Dialog" mit dem Sprecher zu führen. Die Übungen erleichtern es, die Inhalte gut aufzunehmen und seine Sprachkenntnisse dann in der Praaxis selbst aktiv anzuwenden.
