Good read - an old favourite
Not Clancy's best by a long shot (I think it's a narrative of a submarine computer war game that Clancy helped develop), and the second hand copy I purchased had biro scrawl over a few pages at the back.... but still worth a read (especially if you manage to buy it at a good discount).

CLANCY T., a Strategy Guide to Submarine Warfare
A Strategy Guide to Submarine Warfare - so this book is ment to be a guide for a submarine warfare computer simulation. It shows the abilities of an US-submarine in the last century within an fictive story that might came true - see actual quarrels concerning Senkaku / Diaoyu islands - nothing more, but nothing less.It is well done - showing the technical capabilities of submarine system at the end of 20th century - comparing to "Silent Hunter" - a leap from WWII to the edge of the next century. This book explains basics for submarine "dummies" in an eloquent way. Anybody seeking for "Hunt Red MAO" has to realize - this is the wrong "movie".Apart from minor "blurrings" and few expenable passages written just for proud US-Citizens, the book presents a multitude of additional information (interview, glossary, bibliography) for submarine fans.

An Example of Big Name Writer Working with Unknown Author, and That is Not a Compliment
Disappointing. Doesn't feel like it's a real Tom Clancy at all; it feels more like he allowed the use of his name to a ghostwriter and possibly some help with the tactical/political end of the writing. The only character who amounts to anything is Captain Bartholomew Mackey, and he is a cardboard cutout with no depth at all. The secondary characters are not even given names, just job titles! For all practical purposes, they are ghosts. It is so NOT how Tom Clancy writes. This is one of the reasons I feel Clancy was little to non-involved in the production of this novel. The repetition of phrases used in the writing, particularly as regards the behavior of the torpedoes, becomes like nails on a chalkboard after awhile. While I am aware the Navy follows set procedures for torpedo firing, I've also read enough books by the World War II submarine captains like George Grider, Gene Fluckey, and Dick O'Kane to know that a crew that has been together for awhile becomes more casual about this and has their own phrasing that is used. It would have been nice to see some of this; it would have made the novel much less like a manual and more like the real world.Essentially, this novel is a big wet kiss to the Los Angeles class attack submarines and the Mark 48 ADCAP torpedo. I will not go so far as to say it reads like fanfic, but it has no depth and little width. Even with Tom Clancy's name on it, I cannot recommend this book to readers of military fiction.

This book sinks at its moorings
This is a really bad book. Allow me to rephrase that: if you are looking for an exciting novel centered on submarine warfare, you need to keep looking. SSN is not the answer to your search. As a novel, it’s really poor. The back cover blurb really, really oversells the book.On the other hand, if you’re writing your own novel and doing research on late-Cold-War era submarine operations, capabilities, and tactics, it’s a useful book. Tip: buy the Kindle Edition so you can search for words. If there’s anything I expect from Clancy it’s accuracy, and SSN does not disappoint on that score. As a writer, I’m often wondering what would the conversation in the control room sound like when the captain is confronted with various tactical scenarios. I’ve saved multiple hours of research on questions like that with this book. But most readers are simply looking for a good novel. This isn’t it.In fact, it really isn’t a novel at all. It amounts to the proper way to play out the fifteen scenarios in the video game by the same name. As fiction goes it is frankly boring. The good guys always win, the bad guys always make conveniently stupid decisions, there are almost never any hardware failures. The captain is a cardboard-cutout character and the rest of the crew do not even merit names. The submarine, the Cheyenne (SSN-773), a Los Angeles-class fast attack boat, has more kills than a machine-gunner taking down a feedlot of cows, and receives about the same amount of effective return fire that you would expect from a herd of trigger-happy bovines who don’t happen to possess any weapons.Clancy is one of my favorite military adventure/action writers. Everything else I have read by him is edge-of-your-seat-miss-your-bedtime-can’t-tear-yourself-away good. But not only is SSN not his best outing, this book sinks at its moorings, never even pulling away from its berth. You want a good novel? Mothball this hulk and keep looking. Two stars.

One of the most enjoyable Tom Clancy related works
While SSN might not satisfy some pure techno thriller readers as it is based on a computer game of the same name, which naturally means that the hero ship of the game and novel, the U.S.S. Cheyenne works its way through more than 60 Chinese ships and submarines, it is nevertheless an enjoyable work by Clancy. Seeing the Chinese not being 10 feet tall militarily in the near future makes it very enjoyable.Of course it's not just the Cheyenne that blasts through the Chinese fleet with near total impunity but the Independence Carrier Battle Group as well. All in all definitely recommended.

This is a great book for anyone wanting to learn the nomenclature and nuances of submarine warfare. From a novel point of view, however, it follows the "game" for which it was written and will be disappointing for anyone looking for Clancy's usual narrative.

1 US Submarine battles the Chinese Navy
A little know but very gripping and enjoyable tale of 1 US submarine against the Chinese military. This is NOT a new book but it is about the Spratley Islands that China is currently taking over in the South China Sea.

Story flows well and good writing. Maybe you should read the Red Storm Rising also by TC, Slightly dated material BUT with much info on what happens when govt leaders become desperate!
