This is probably a collector's item. Almost gave it away!

The Merck Manual can give you great background on many ailments that you might want a heads up on. Easy to use, I think, and full of very basic and helpful information about most anything you can imagine. It does not let you work back from symptoms very easily though. DKW

This book is fantastic. A great reference. It strikes a nice balance between good amounts of information and being a quick guide. If you can, certainly go for a newer edition but the older editions are just as good with perhaps some dated info.
