The Untouchables: The Complete Series

When this series was released in total I was overjoyed. I remember as a kid watching virtually all episodes of the series including the pilot. I have always liked classic gangster stories and this may be the best series ever. Robert Stack who was brilliant in his portrayal of Eliot Ness even looks much like him. Only the weak fourth season mars the series because of "political correctness" (Liberal fascism!) which diminished the power of the stories...Less Italians, more Anglos and much less violence. But the gangs in the Big Town were for the most part Italians along with Jewish and Irish gangs; that is factual history. The Italians were largely very honest, hard working immigrants like the Irish, etc. yet often these people were the primary victims of these criminal enterprises as the blacks today on the South Side are the primary victims of black hoodlums. This show portrayed the cops as the good guys fighting crooks and crooked political office holders. Most of these stories vary away from the original UNTOUCHABLES book which dealt with chasing down Big Al Capone. Many of the thugs in the stories are based on real hoodlums, but the stories surrounding them are often fictional though some truth is woven inbetween. One episode about Dutch Schulz was loosely based on his downfall, but Ness never had anything to do with that. But still, the stories In the first three seasons are superb anyway. Lots of violence, machine guns all over the place and lots of very nasty characters. Frank Nitti, a real gangster and head of the Capone Mob was a nasty leader but rather a brilliant one. But like all thugs, his day would come. Nitti is brilliantly portrayed and is in many later seasons after the first one. As a lover of the City of Chicago, I watched carefully how it was portrayed in the show; mostly pretty good but the streets always seem to be wet.(!) Ness frequently meets with informants at his favorite private office, an Elevated Train Station! I have ridden those many a year, and they are the symbol of Chicago as the Subway is of New York (where I have lived for many years,). I had worked for the Transit Authority (Staten Is) for a long time before retiring. But I do miss the Big Town and love watching the great show CHICAGO PD which I will review at the end of the season. Some of these stories are masterpieces, though we should remember Ness was a Treasury Agent, not a G man. But having him play cop is much more interesting; on CSI and NCIS series the investigators do a lot more "policing" than in reality, but it makes those shows much more interesting if they chase down baddies and sometimes shoot them. And there is a lot of "shooting" on the UNTOUCHABLES. Further, Paramount should be praised for the imaginative and seductive photography used in the series. Low camera angles, heavy lighting, and actually showing ceilings, making the sets more believable; this series is better in Black and White than it would be in color; it adds more atmosphere to the rather gloomy surrounding of the depression era Chicago. The narration of the show is by Walter Winchell, a brilliant choice by the producers. And the musical theme is also outstanding. Sadly, the producers caved to the bleeding hearts in the fourth season, but by then the show had run its course. A brilliant, action packed, well casted (with plenty of big names!), well acted series. Long live THE UNTOUCHABLES!! Paramount would later release a movie of the same name with Kevin Kostner who played Ness well, but most of the story was pure fiction, especially with Nitti falling off a roof of an office building (played by S. Stallone)!. Never happened; Nitti would take over the gang and run it for some time. FIVE STARS for this prize; the picture quality of the DVDs is outstanding; better than when it was broadcast on network TV. One word for those interested; BONES is back, unfortunately with the cheap replacement for Sweets, a even more repulsive creepy fellow! Fox producers want a Sweets-like character on the show, but I don't know why! Only the Shadow knows!! I watch the show to see Bones and Booth work together along with Hodgins and Angela, not that other looney!! I got my UNTOUCHABLE SERIES (all four seasons) from Amazon. Enjoy!

This is a fantastic production at an incredible price. It includes the words in captions (when selected). For ease of watching I took them out of the original case and use a thin clamshell plastic case for each episode. We have been watching episodes every night for weeks and are still in Season 2. It is amazing how much you get for a very reasonable price. I really appreciate having these episodes. I watched a few of these when they were out originally a long time ago. The quality is excellent and it is nice to be able to see all the words to better follow a lot of dialog and not miss any of the details. The acting is so good you think it is really happening before your very eyes. Robert Stack is such a good actor as Elliot Ness. I wouldn't try to operate out of the original case and instead switch to a DVD storage box and a plastic clamshell case for each episode. It would be close to impossible to carefully care for the DVDs and use the original shipping case. Thanks so much to the seller for making this wonderful series available. I realized Quinn Martin made this series and had already bought and watched two other of his series way back then including "The Streets of San Francisco" and "The Fugitive". This series was made before they switched to making them in color. The Fugitive switched in the middle of the series.

Grew up watching these vintage series. The Untouchables were one of my favorites. Great price. Well packaged.

I used to watch this series with my late father and haven't been able to find it on any apps. Since my love for the Country will not allow me to watch the Super Bowl I needed a go to and this IS IT!! Began watching as soon as I got the disks and the only thing missing is my pop's unfortunately. If you're a fan of this series, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. So happy I still have a good dvd player.

First of all, the case these dvd's come in is really BAD ! it would be better in a better case. I've only watched five disk's so far. the picture quality is nice and clear and is in FULL screen, Yay ! Sound on my Emerson TV is not too bad, need to turn volume up from normal 22 to 31, but i can live with that. like Rawhide and Deep Space nine the cases can cause cracks and emotional distress, lol. they should have used multiple smaller user friendly cases . Over all so far I am happy with this series and glad I finally got it and it was a good price. My brother Mike and I grew up watching this series, among others as well. buy this and enjoy

Not bad for a back lot filmed show. Season 1 features an extra The Lucy Show episode. Continual storyline suffers from Eliot Ness (sic) co-authorship. Overall, a pretty decent show. Packaging suffers a bit from cheapness, but quite worthwhile presentation of subject matter, includes many appearances by 'stars' of the day, relegation of the police work includes wire recorders and other police tools of the time. Lots of Tommy guns a plus.

I was skeptical but this is the real deal and it came in case that was very organized. Very pleased with my purchase and DVD quality is what you expect.

５０年前にＴＶ放映されていたのを記憶している方々にとっては「至福のひととき」をお約束する映像です。ただしリージョン１です。また「聴覚障害者用」の英語字幕があるだけで、日本語吹き替えも日本語字幕もありません。それさえ覚悟すれば、「日本製｣に比べてぐんと格安です。と言うより、これがリーズナブルな価格なのです。日本製が高すぎる。もっとも、「輸入物」は価格変動が大きいので、タイミングよく底値を掴んでください。内容的には全く問題なし。英語も比較的平易なのと、ナレーションが多いので、１／３程度理解できれば、充分楽しめます。

La principal duda que yo tenía al comprarlos fue si los iba a poder reproducir, ya los CD’s son muy viejos y casi ya no existen reproductores, además de que está la cuestión de las diferentes regiones. En mi caso yo los reproduzco en en Play Station 5. Se pueden reproducir en español o en inglés con subtítulos en español, pero no todas las temporadas. La cuarta temporada sólo se puede reproducir con el audio y los textos ambos en inglés solo.

Fabulous show. Great memories of watching it all those years ago.

Good series if you like older stuff

It’s wonderful to see this old classic on an 82 inch flat screen TV in remarkably high resolution. Of course, the attitudes and behaviours of the main characters are often unacceptable by today’s standards. There’s considerable sexism, racism and police aggression, all of which would not have seemed out of place in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. They grate today. It looks often as if the sets and props were shared with "Some Like it Hot", also produced in 1959. Robert Stack doesn’t give a performance as such. More of a lecture. The one colour episode included in the set is actually an episode from "The Lucy Show". It’s wonderful. Lucille Ball dazzles while Robert Stack portrays a stage prop very competently. Despite all of its shortcomings, the set is a real treat. It creates a wonderful filme-noire atmosphere. When watching many shows from the 1950’s, one is actually watching a team inventing a genre of entertainment. That makes them truly compelling. "The Untouchables" set a standard for TV police drama that held for about 20 years when "Hill Street Blues" once again reinvented the police procedural in 1981.
