The Night Fairy

A fellow writer recommended 'The Night Fairy,' and I'm thankful: it's such a rich story, and the illustrations add to this tale.

This is not your everyday fairy story. It has some dark elements mostly pertaining to the unforgiving nature of...nature. Flory must use her wits to survive. She doesn't rely on anyone else to save her and she learns about friendship vs. ownership along the way. It introduces more mature and poetic language than an average book for this age group. The illustrations are detailed and luminous, and as you read what's happening in the story you look forward to which scene will be illustrated next. They never disappoint. Highly recommend and hope this is just the first in a series, because Flory is such a delightful, multidimensional character.

I love the story it was very thoughtful about friendship and trusting others. I was really disappointed and sad that when things are getting really interesting it ended in mid conversation. 😃☹️😥

When a sleepy bat mistakes her for a moth and takes a bite, Flory the night fairy is left wingless--and with one fear: bats. She decides to become a day fairy to avoid the creatures, but the day is not without its own dangers: squirrels, spiders, praying mantises...but Flory, always stubborn and resourceful, learns to survive and makes a home.The Night Fairy is an ideal read-aloud for any children old enough to handle a few scary moments--the language is lyrical and descriptive, making it a pleasure for the adult reading as well as the child being read to. From the first lovely description on page one, "eyes that sparkled like blackberries under dew," to its humorous and endearing ending, this book is definitely one that fits into that "small gem" category along with its main character. I loved the wonderful world-building of fairy life--the petal dresses, the thorn dagger--I loved the humor and the cast of supporting characters, especially Skuggle, the most squirrel-like squirrel you will ever come across, I loved the adventure, I loved Angela Barrett's beautiful illustrations. The omniscient narrative voice was slightly off-putting; it came across as very obviously human and adult. I would prefer a firmer handle on the fairy perspective, but I will allow that this familiar narrator may make the story readily accessible and familiar to young readers.

An exquisitely illustrated children's story narrated by Angela Barrett. I collect beautifully illustrated children's books and they are becoming increasingly harder to find.Not since Doctor Rabbit's Foundling illustrated by Cindy Szekeres I have I seen such beautiful illustrations in a children's book. There are thirteen or fourteen full color page illustrations. One of them is on both sides of the page. They are beautiful.Flory is a night fairy whose wings get destroyed by a bat. She decides then to become a day fairy. She meets Skuggle the squirrel and they help each other. She decides she will befriend and tame the hummingbird in the garden and ride on her wings. She saves the hummingbird from a spider web and saves her eggs by warming them.This is a beautiful little fairy tale. Perfect for reading to a grade school child. A great collectible. I will be looking for other Angela Barrett and Laura Schlitz books.

I read this book to my 9 year old and I enjoyed it as much as she did. It is fantastically imaginative with really great characters! There are many children's books about fairies... but this one really stands out. It's very heart warming and exciting. You really don't know what's going to happen next. As far as reading level, it's a little too challenging for my 9 year old to read on her own... the content is on her level but she probably wouldn't recognize some of the words and phrases. I was more than happy to read this one to her! I'm sure she'll want to read it again on her own when she's 10 or 11. Fantastic book! It also has wonderful illustrations!!!

I bought this book to read to my grandchildren (3-8) in MI over the Thanksgiving weekend. They absolutely loved it! We read it some every night, and had to have a marathon read, during and after lunch to finish it up on the last day. The characters were very believeable and the whole story very interesting. Because they liked it so much, I bought another one to read to my grandchildren in FL. Again a big hit! This time the grown ups were listening as well, as they could hear us where we were reading in the living room. When a funny part came up, I could hear them laughing too, from the kitchen and the computer. A thoroughly enjoyable read, with funny, sad, encouraging and uplifting parts throughout.

While I felt let down by the artwork, I enjoyed the very original story of Flory the night fairy. I would enjoy seeing a bit more of her life among her own kind. A delightful little tale.

A fairy story that isn't based on pop-culture characters, beautiful illustrations, and a great first chapter book, lots of points of discussion for readers (friendship, kindness, kinship, stewardship, neglect, care of self/others, benevolence, greed, instincts...).

Fierce, gripping & fantastic!It’s the story of a little young fairy who was attacked when she was very small because of which she has lost her wings and could no longer fly.Things get difficult when she tries to survive alone and no one to guide her. She meets good beings, evil ones and the few who would become her trusted friends.I read this book in one sitting as it was really gripping, tense and beautifully written.I would like to highlight the illustrations which made the reading experience so special and memorable. Kudos to the artist!Read this book with the young children for the times when you feel you are not enough and life has only been harsh to you. Your perspective will change and you will get to learn that not all fairies have it easy 🧚‍♂️

My daughters loved this story and so did I! the chapters are just the right length for reading one a night and the Illustrations are beautiful. It's a great example of a girl overcoming the odds and saving the day. Would thoroughly recommend to any children who believe in fairies!
