## Description

The Sansula - a patented innovation of the firm Hokema - is an innovative development of the kalimba (also known as Sansa or Mbira) which has its origins in southern Africa. The Kalimba is a metal-tongued instrument, played by plucking the tines with the thumbs. It is found in Africa in uncountable shapes and variations. Whereby the vibrations of the tines are amplified in different ways e.g. over a resonator, a hollow vessel such as a calabash or simply a piece of solid wood. The vibration of the Sansula are first `stored` in a wooden block and from there transmitted to a resonating membrane. The sound produced is far more prolonged than with other means of amplification. Due to the tuning - the octaves are adjacent - a wonderful, soft sound full of overtones can be easily coaxed from the instrument.

Tolle Sache. Ich habe keinen Vergleich mit Billigmodellen, aber ein (klangliches) Erfolgserlebnis ist mit dieser Sansula meiner Meinung nach so gut wie garantiert. Meine ehrliche Empfehlung für alle, die interessiert und experimentierfreudig sind. Ausreichend stabil, auch für Kinderhände. Vielen Dank an den Erfinder.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What is the tuning? - is it standard scale or can it be tuned to multiple chords such as Em or Am?**
A: The Hokema Kalimba Sansula  is in A-minor with additional tines tuned to B and F. 
Tuning (can be varied up or down  about 11/2 notes each direction ): A, C, C, A, A, F, E, E, H there are several tuning books available that will show you the different scales and we have a free tunning.pdf form that shows  the default tunning and  the  possible variations of each tine so you can design your own tunings

**Q: Does this have the contact mic on it to plug into mixer/amp?**
A: No this is the non electric version without the pickup and microphone cable.

**Q: How difficult is this instrument to play if you have smaller hands? (female)**
A: My wife has smaller female hands and plays this instrument quite easily. Highly recommended.

**Q: Does this have a tensioning device like the deluxe? If not, why not? Is the membrane replaceable?**
A: The Deluxe Sansula is a natural goat hide which will react to moisture and therefore we integrated the tension screws to be able to adjust. The Sansula Renaissance has an artificial Remo Renaissance drum skin hide which is durable and moisture resistant. Therefore no tension screws are needed. We do offer a refurbish service in case that is needed. Please contact our regional distributor in California for more information
