Making Friends

Brilliant.
Andrew Mathews has the Midas touch. His insight is razor sharp, fresh, and clearly explained, never pandering nor pontificating. Whenever I purge my library of books on relationships his go on the Must Keep file. He captures the essence of what one needs to know and practice when getting along well with others. Brilliant, witty, to the point, and light hearted. If you only buy one book on relationships, buy this one.

Social Skills Info everyone should know (and follow!)
The content was great, tells you the social skills you need to get along with others. After reading it's important to look deep within yourself (as I did) and see whether you're following this common sense advice. Boils down to really thinking "do I like it when others do this to me" such as giving unsolicited advice, etc.So on the basis of content I give it 5 stars. The writing is occasionally poor, and I'm surprised since this is published by a major publisher, and the writer had an editor, so the writing quality only deserves a four. The illustrations are nice but they make the book look as if it were targeted at children of elementary school age. It really isn't, it's geared to adults, so don't judge this book by its cover or its pictures. (The writer also illustrated this book so you can understand his wish to use his own drawings.)

It helps
I read this book when I was a teenager some thirty years ago. I was shy and quiet and didn't talk to many people outside of my immediate social group. This book gave me strategies for talking to and interacting with others. It did it in such a fun and humorous way too. I remember thinking that "I'm not abnormal; everybody feels this way" It helped me to not feel so alone and to understand that everyone goes through self-doubt but some are just better with strategies for dealing with that self-doubt. Remembering the impact of this book on me, I recently repurchased it for my 14-year-old daughter who is just like I was. She hasn't read it as yet (kids are reluctant to take parental advice). I hope she does though. I have high hopes.

Making Friends.
I purchased to provide info for my clients who often have limited lifeskills. Very clear, easy to read, non-academic discourse. Liked it a great deal and use it as a practical aid for clients to take a little information away with them at a time. Making Friends

Good advice in this book
Good advice in this book, but I am having a hard time sticking with reading it. Somewhat boring. Ordered this book as used but in great condition. It was obviously used. I am overall disappointed.

A Great Book
This book has everything you want in it. Its funny, well written and makes you look at yourself and others in relative terms. Everything is common sense but common sense is sometimes overlooked in relationships. You cant go wrong with this book. As always Amazon had a wonderful price and shipping was flawless.

powerful stuff
I have to give a counter balance to the other reviews. Making Friends is indeed not about how to meet new people. It is about interacting with people in a way that is pleasant and effective, for you and often for the people involved. Like the other books of Matthews I have (Being Happy and Follow your Heart) it tackles a specific area of personal development leading towards more happiness and peace of mind. While re-reading the various books over the last 8 years, I have found that sometimes one gives more benefit than another, depending on personal circumstances in my life at the time. However, each time at least one of the books will hit the spot and effectively help me lighten up or progress to where I want to be. I have found the same with a large number of people I've given the books to: they tend to prefer different ones for no clear (to me at least) reason, but generally at least one has impact at any time. My advice: buy all 3 and read them all. Each time you re-read you will find some more appealing than others, and you will find your favourite one will change as you do. They are probably the best written, most easy to read, and most relevant books around. They work fantastically if you let them.

Ignore the title and this book is a life changer.
This book changed my life, the worst thing about it is the title which is very off putting. To put it simply it's more about looking at yourself and the cause and effect of how you act - what you give is what you get etc.Let me put it this way, it's like an outer body experience that makes you look at yourself and slaps yourself around the face to snap out of the rut YOU have gotten into by the way you behave.Once I accepted that perspective this book is amazing with simple steps to 'Self Help' and be more thoughtful and understanding which leads to a better self.
