A Sturdy, High-Resolution Display for Deep-Dive Raspberry Pi Projects
The MELIFE 3.5-inch TFT LCD is a solid choice for makers who need a compact, dedicated display for their Raspberry Pi ecosystem. While it fits the standard footprint of a Pi 3 or 4, its real value shines when you step away from the automated drivers and look at what the hardware can actually do under the hood. Build and Hardware Feel Sturdy Construction: This screen is packaged well and has a surprising amount of heft to it. It doesn’t feel like a flimsy piece of "budget" glass; it feels like a durable industrial component. Resistive Touch Reality: It is important to remember that this is a resistive touchscreen, not capacitive. It relies on physical pressure rather than the electrical charge from your finger. Consequently, it won't have the "glide" or multi-touch responsiveness of a modern smartphone, but it is highly accurate when using the included touch pen. Pin-Powered Convenience: Drawing power directly from the GPIO header means one less cable to manage in your build—a huge plus for portable projects or "Cyberdeck" style setups. Performance and Custom Integration Pi Zero 2 W Compatibility: Although marketed for the larger Pi boards, I was able to get this working with a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W with just a little bit of tinkering. It’s a great pairing for a "mini-desktop" or a dedicated sensor dashboard. Direct Hardware Interaction: While most users will stick to standard libraries (like tslib), I chose to bypass the software bloat and interact with the hardware directly. By reading raw kernel events from /dev/input/event0 and writing straight to the framebuffer using Python, I found the display to be incredibly fast and responsive. The "Bloat-Free" Advantage: Stripping away the heavy GUI frameworks proved that this screen is capable of high performance even on lower-powered hardware like the Pi Zero 2 W. It was a fantastic learning experience to see the screen's true characteristics without the abstraction of a heavy OS layer. Pros Great Resolution: The 480x320 output is sharp for a 3.5-inch panel. High Learning Value: Perfect for those who want to learn about Linux input events and framebuffer manipulation. Wide Compatibility: Works across the entire Pi line, from the original B to the Pi 5. No External Power: Keeps your project footprint clean and portable. Cons Software Setup: Like most SPI screens, it requires specific driver installation or manual configuration to get it running—not quite "plug-and-play" out of the box for beginners. Resistive Limitations: Not ideal for gestures or fast swiping. I implemented a lot of debouncing logic and still didn't get it all right. Some of the libraries probably do a better job of this than I did. Final Verdict: 4/5 Stars The MELIFE 3.5-inch display is a high-quality "utility" screen. It’s perfect for those who want a reliable interface for their Pi and aren't afraid to get their hands dirty in the terminal. I’m giving this 4 stars—it’s a responsive, clear, and durable display that has earned its spot in my electronics lab

Great Picture Quality
The screen is small but has great picture quality. It is responsive. I did have some issues with the drivers but fixed it fairly quickly. There are better and larger screens at a lower price.
