One of model railroading's best-known scenery modelers offers new techniques for adding realism to a layout of any size or scale. Featuring today's newest products and equipment, this third edition of one of Kalmbach's top-sellers will attract modelers with contemporary images of diesel locomotives and urban settings, plus updates to Dave's trademark scenery “recipes.” Hundreds of photographs bring the techniques to life and make it easy for modelers to get started quickly. • Includes new chapters on Western scenery and desert modeling, and city scenery and urban settings • Ideal for beginning, intermediate, and advanced modelers planning a layout Review: How to Build Realistic Model Railroad Scenery - This author has done an amazing job going through step by step on how to create realistic scale model scenery. He adds tips and tricks that helped me to build some small scale movie sets I was making. I suggest this book to anyone trying to do what the title implies. It does not go into much detail on any other model railroad facets, but for the money and subject matter, it is well worth the money. Review: A whole NEW book! - I have Mr. Frary's other two editions of this book. I bought the first one years ago when I got interested in my trains again around 1982. So much had changed and I never was very good at scenery that I needed "something" to help me improve my lay-out. Mr. Frary's first edition helped me do a very credible job of building scenery on the lay-out at that time with his "water soluble method." Fast forward--after another hiatus from model trains, I came back, yet again, to my model work and read a mention somewhere that referred to this "third" edition. Like many folks, I thought this would be just an up-dated book with a few changes and maybe a new suggestion or two. WRONG! Mr. Frary has managed to put together a whole new book--new pictures, new techniques, new "everything! Wow! I don't know where to start, but I know my scenery is going to take a giant leap forward. It's still "water-soluble," but he's added all kinds of new equipment and supplies to create marvelous landscaped vistas in miniature! If you are new to model trains, if you are trying your hand at building scenery that will be the envy of your friends in the hobby, or outside the hooby, get THIS book--the third edition! Get it even if you have the first or second edition--you need this book to learn about the latest techniques in building "knock-your-eyes-out" scenery that could fool Mother Nature! Oh, and don't worry if you don't think you are "very artistic"--Mr. Frary will fix that, if you follow his instructions and advice! You might surprise yourself and have a TON of FUN! Still unsure? Look around and find his dvd on building scenery! Between this book and his dvd, I bet you become the "scenery expert" in your group of hobbyists!

Great insight to model railroading
awesome information, made several changes based on my readings. How I create scenery, store engines and rolling stock, paint scenery and much more. The must have book for any model railroader.

Scenery Hints
The scenery book is good at explaining multiple techniques in creating scenery. The depth which they go into is good for an experienced model railroader and may details required for a novice. But it helped me identify some techniques I have not tried before as there are many ways to get to a result you are looking for. This book expanded my options on water, mountains and subtle techniques in building town scenes.

Excellent for a beginner's modeler
This book is just loaded with ideals. It gives excellent and detailed ways of managing and building things. The author is very experienced and described several different ways those mentioned which one she prefers and why. I definitely plan on using several of these on building my next railroad and am very pleased with buying.

Very impressive
I only have one train set. It was an Athearn set (that I reviewed here) that has piqued my interest in model railroading. I bought this book to see what possibilities are out there for building track scenery. Well, this book is rather detailed and shows you how to do some amazing things. As a newcomer to the hobby, I was rather impressed by the creativity inside this book. A great buy for people like me who are simply interested and more than likely a great buy for those who are serious about building scenery.

Still a relevant guide
Dave Frary includes lots of techniques, enough to satisfy most modelers. Some of the ideas seem dated because they've been around a while, but all are still relevant today. Sure there are more modern materials and tools, but the information in this book is still applicable and useful. Fundamental concepts don't go out of style.

Una fonte preziosa per molte informazioni, pratico ed immediato, con molte "ricette" fai da te per prepararsi in casa i materiali di base. Consigliato anche ai neofiti.

Very practical in its approach.
This is an excellent "how to do it book". I've used the instructions for modelling water on our club layout to very good effect. The illustrations are of USA models but this does not detract from the instructions that the author gives. Indeed many of the photos are inspirational. I rate this book very highly.
