The Chess Toolbox: Practical Techniques Everyone Should Know

This book contains some excellent material on various positional topics. The first part of the book deals with exchanges and it is the best dicussion I have ever read on the topic. Other topics like how to use open files and Isolated Queen Pawn positions are also covered very nicely. This book does not cover all aspects of positional chess but if you are rated 1600 to 1800 then studying this book diligently should help your play a lot.

The Chess Toolbox is exactly a book I have been searching for. This book contains positions from Masters games and it categorized in making the right decision in a position pointing out simple techniques to turning your advantage to a winning position. Studying these positions I’m now discovery and understanding such advantage as before I didn’t recognize them. This book is for the serious club player that read and study endgame, middle game strategies, understanding how to evaluate positions and very well acquainted in tactical and positional understanding. You are given a position that you try to understand and solve then the author explain the solution. There are exercises at the end of each chapter.

I've given many books good reviews in the past, I am simply reaching an age where I don't care anymore.First of all the book supposedly says what it teaches, but it is not as "practical" as the author says it would be.If you want to write a chess book, then at least make some effort to make it at least understandable for advanced beginner/intermediate players. I can think of many who will just pick up this book, read the introduction, and close it within 5 minutes. Shelve it eternally in a dark closet for a millennia.If you are a player like me who is frustrated with chess, who cannot find the answers, who seek improvement, then do no buy a book that is solely written to impress masters and grandmasters, seek to buy from an author who desires to teach and not bloat their ego with fancy games.This much needs to be said about this book.
