> Senegal Parrot Food
It is hard to find parrot food for parrots larger than Cockatiels and smaller than Amazons. If you buy Cockatiel food, most if it is too small and much goes uneaten. If you buy Amazon food, much of it is things like hazelnuts in the shell which smaller parrots cannot tackle.ECONOMYI have had a Senegal, which is sorta a miniature, colorful, African Gray, for 20 years. Although conures are about the same size, Senegals have stronger beaks, and prefer larger food than conures---but this is the best mixture for Senegals that I have found. Most mixes for any size bird are 1/3 or more "Cheerios"-like pellets, which my parrot flatly refuses to eat. The result is that 3/4 or more of most mixes goes uneaten and is simply wasted. The "Healthy Select Conure Diet" has no pellets, and therefore is the most economical mix I've found---because relatively little goes uneaten.PARROTS NEED FRUITS, VEGIES, AND PROTEINMany self-appointed parrot "experts" insist on the value of pellets for a rounded diet. Okay, but that is meaningless if your parrot will not eat the pellets, and my experience is that no bird will eat pellets if it has a choice. I strongly suggest supplementing your parrot's diet with fresh fruit and vegetables. My Senegal particularly likes apples, grapes, slices of oranges, and fresh corn-on-the cob. He refuses most other vegetables, but I've known parrots which love carrots and even broccoli. In the wild, all birds eat bugs and even lizards, etc.---a parrot needs some protein. My Senegal (Georgie) eats dinner with me, and usually chooses the meat on my plate, which is a demonstration of the need for protein in his diet. Georgie also likes kidney beans and chick peas---another source of protein. Almost forgot!--Georgie's favorite food is egg, but that's actually true of all birds. I rarely buy luncheon meat (salami, sliced turkey, ham, etc.) but when I do, I treat the birds to small peicesSMALL TO MEDIUM-SIZE PARROTS NEED NUTS (for calories) AND EXERCISEMany self-appointed parrot "experts" preach pellets and NO nuts, in order to keep their parrots from getting fat. All of those "experts" own Amazons or larger parrots, not Senegals, Conures, or smaller birds. Indeed, my Yellow-Napped Amazon (Oliver) is a small green turkey---even on a primarily pellet diet, and Macaws have a tendency to get fat---but that's mostly because they do not get any exercise. In contrast, Georgie (my 25-year-old Senegal) is trim and svelte---even though he has access to all the peanuts-in-the-shell he can eat and I feed him almonds and cashews as treats. It depends on the type of parrot and its activity level. Conures are even more active than Senegals. There is no danger of a conure in a reasonable-size cage getting fat. I also "run" with Georgie (so that he can fly while on my finger) about 100' before bedtime to keep his lungs clear (if birds don't work-out a little, they get fungus in their lungs---which you can detect as a yeasty smell on their breath). So give your small-medium parrot plenty of calories, and room to exercise.> Click on “Stoney” just below the product title to see my other reviews, or leave a comment to ask a question.

I have a green cheeked conure which is the smallest ...
I have a green cheeked conure which is the smallest of the conure babies. Greenie absolutely, hands-down adores this food and will NOT eat any other food items placed in her dish. I've tried to give her pellets, fresh food and treats and even other brands of seed (including Zupreem). She immediately throws anything and everything else out of her bowl -- untouched. When her seed bowl is filled with the Healthy Select Natural Conure food, she eats this seed down to the bottom leaving literally nothing but a few empty shells. I would have given this product five stars except for the shipping charges which are OUTRAGEOUS - almost half the cost of the product!! Really, Petco???? I'll just go into the store and buy the product off the shelf. I won't spend $6.00 in gas to drive to the store.
