The New Sylva: A Discourse of Forest and Orchard Trees for the Twenty-First Century Hardcover – October 21, 2014

This is one of the most unique and beautifully designed books I own. The illustrations are detailed, well composed and alive. I love the use of red to highlight notes. I recommend this book to artists of all stripes, to nature lovers and to those interested in trees. It would make a great gift, and every library should own it.

I was so disappointed in the book and printing I contacted the publisher. I thought Symblet's work would really be showcased but instead looked like terrible grey green enlargements of trees. I love her work!! The printing on one page printed right over the illustrations--terrible!!

I am disappointed in this book. I expected the illustrations to be stronger. Instead of being black and white, they were more blueish gray. Sadly disappointing. I may donate it to the library.

A lot to be enjoyed.However in the first para of Chapter One we hear about Evelyn's witnessing of the executions of Charles I and Oliver Cromwell etc. I nearly choked on my cornflakes. Surely every schoolboy (or girl) knows that Cromwell was not executed. After that howler, I wondered if I should believe anything else.But much else seemed to be accurate and of interest. The illustrations are not very attractive to my eye.

Beautiful illustrations with classic Typography. As an art student I used a previous version of this book as reference for some projects and gleaned some fantastic inspiration. Just gave this as a gift to a student Horticulturalist and she loved it!

There are full page and double page illustrations of whole trees which are lovely.. the detailed botanic drawings are amazing!
