These soccer ball ice molds are a disappointment
I am a soccer nut, and these soccer ball ice cube molds seemed like such a cute idea. However, I have tried 2 times and so far they are a failure.1. Unlike the ice in the product photo, the ice I made is so cloudy that you can't see the pattern when the ball is in liquid. In my attached photo, the pattern shows up well against a black surface, but that's not how you are going to serve it. The pattern disappears in a glass. I tried letting the water sit overnight before freezing, but it didn't eliminate the cloudiness.2. You get 4 molds, each holding around 2 tbsp of water. However, 1 of the molds won't seal, and so half the water leaked out, making half a ball.3. When the ice freezes, it expands, pushing the 2 halves of the mold apart. As a result, you get a ridge of ice around the "equator" of the ball so it is not round. Again, the result doesn't look like the advertised product photo.4. Once you have these molds, you realize how ridiculous it is to try to make 4 ice cubes at a time. Not good for a party. The 4 molds come with a tiny funnel. You put the 2 halves of the molds together and then pour water in through a small hole in the top. The bottom of the mold is flat so you can put it in the freezer.Again, it is a cute idea, but save your money, even if you are a soccer nut. I may try it to mold jello, but the fact that the mold doesn't seal completely is problematic. I don't really want jello all over my refrigerator!Update Jul-25-2018:The seller was very nice and contacted me after my review. The seller recommended only filling the molds 90% full.To make clear ice, I googled suggestions to use distilled water, boiled water, demineralized water, or a special cooler. I made a 3rd attempt, using demineralized filtered water from my Jura coffeemaker and then boiling it. It made no difference, just as cloudy. When I went through the 3rd attempt, a second mold sprung a leak, so I finally gave up and submitted a return request. That’s when I found out that Amazon returns have become quite the gauntlet, if you have a question. Overall, this $10 purchase turned into a painful experience.
