Gripping novel of adventure
Authentic and convincing. Clearly well researched in the author's customary style. Historically correct. A recommended introduction to the author's books.

Hammond Innes delivers
Nice to read a “new” Hammond Innes, great to be able to get them for Kindle. I love his distinctive style and rhythm. Just can’t quite give this one 5 stars.

Not the best place to start with Innes
Not one of his best but still worth a read. A scientist flies over the Antarctic and spots a ship abandoned, he decides to try and locate but dies before he can start an expedition. His widow recruits a crew to explore the region and hopefully find the ship. Well researched as always with Innes and he really thrives when writing about these sort of wilderness areas. One thing I hated though, and it is a personal bugbear, when speech it written in dialect I find it distracts from the flow of the book, this time it is the Scottish characters.

Gripping Adventure
This story had me gripped very early on. Hammond Innes used his literary powers and imagination to keep me spell-bound throughout the story. It was sometimes quite obvious who were the real 'Goodies and Baddies) but there were twists that sometinmes stunned me. Perhaps my review would have been different if I had read the 'real book' rather than the unabridged version narrated on CD disc. I would like to build a collection of Innes' books on my Kindle but am limited in choice. As my library service has only a few of Innes' works in audio book format, I shall endeavour to be patient until the publishers release more for inclusion in the Kindle store.

Utter tosh.
I didn't choose this story as it came in an Kindle omnibus set of four. I recently enjoyed The Wreck of the Mary Deare, (written many years before) but this book was a disappointment. Even by thriller standards it was completely unbelievable in characters and plot, and to make matters worse thickly padded out with unnecessary detail. I managed about half of it and decided not to waste any more of my time. Still three others to try...

Wonderful.
Great reading experience. Lots to learn. The breadth an depth of knowledge of the author, is reflected in his works.

At the bottom of the world
Innes, I suppose, is like fine wine to me. About fifty years ago, I tried reading one his novels and couldn't make it through. Having just finished "Isvik" and having enjoyed it very much, I think the fault lay in me, not the author. An acquired taste, perhaps. I'm this book, Innes takes us on an exciting journey from England to South America to the great white wastes of Antarctica. From beginning to end, nothing is what it seems to be and everyone wears at least one mask. A good tale for those who enjoy sea stories with high levels of adventure, tension and mystery.

Wow! The man can write!
Suffering a dreary heat wave here in Massachusetts, I wanted to read an adventure set in a foreign clime--a cold one, preferably. The author delivered more than I anticipated. Maybe it's just me, but I was completely sucked into to the locations -- from the shores of East Anglia, to the wild weather of Punta Arenas at the southern tip of South America and a sail through the Weddell Sea. Captivating.

Pretty good read...
Years ago I read the "Wreck of the Mary Deare" and enjoyed it. It was different than I expected but it was a very good story that kept my attention. Based on that book I tried "Isvik" without the same success. This story is very detailed with sailing terms and abbreviations which were basically unintelligible to me. I know bow from stern and port from starboard but that's it. There were also constant referrals to Force 3, Force 5, Force 7 winds (for examples and there were others) and I finally had to look up what each term really meant.Looking past all of the above, it was a good story with solid characters and mostly kept my interest but the difficulties with the sailing info. and the basic differences between the "Queens English" and American English made this a harder than normal read.
