Better 'n Nothin'
I'd rather have this than not so I gave it 3 stars. It may be worthy of 5 if they could bevel the bottom edges to where the battery grip would fit, (OR design one to fit over both camera and battery grip) the quick release plate did not overlap the silicone, AND have a tighter fit overall.Pros- It protects a lot of your camera from usual knocks and scrapes from stair rails, walls, boulders laying around, and in my case it keeps me from scratching or dinging my wife's car door.- It goes on pretty easy without instructions.- Its cut and molded accurately and nothing is misaligned.- All buttons, doors, and hot shoe can be used/accessed (see con's)- If you use quick release type straps and slings you don't have to worry about taking this off.- Its washable and my camera isn't.- I have not washed it or used this very long (a couple of days) so I can not speak for durability but usually silicone takes high heat, springs back to original shape and doesn't lose its color that I've observed (limited experience, just read a lot). Its much like Otter cell phone covering only thinner (if you have experience with them).Cons- On the D850 the fit is a little (not much) looser than I'd like to see. I think of it more as draping over the camera just right than stretched over the camera, but there's a reason for the compromise. Although it can be moved around with normal griping and use if it was any tighter, the open areas of the SD card door, bottom, and mirror are too large and by stretching it would allow the cover to be misshapen and buttons would not align right. The strip of silicone under the mirror curves to the bottom but is a very narrow and loose strip of silicone molding so it can be moved around easily. I hope that can be understood, it fits well and doesn't move around....much. Its the slick nature of silicone.- The cover adds thickness to the gripping of the camera so your camera will feel bigger in your hands. I wear extra large sized gloves so this thickness is not a bother but I do notice the difference. If you have very small hands and the camera already feels big to you then you may not want this.- As mentioned in other reviews, you have to know your camera pretty well as there are no markings. I suppose you could create your own markings (silver sharpie on black cover?) but for me this is not much of a problem even though I've only owned the D850 for a month and came from Canon equipment, I now know my camera pretty well. So there's that, but the fact remains you should know your camera if you are any kind of photographer, neophyte, amateur, semi-pro, and especially a professional.- As mentioned, this will NOT work with the battery grip but I'm never going to be using the battery grip as it makes this camera to big and heavy for my purposes. I knew that when I bought this. Don't think about cutting away any of the molding to make it work, just don't do it. It needs all of the molding to grip the camera.- If you use a quick release plate your going to be OK but it will be clamped down on the silicone cover just a tad.- The thickness of the walls (not overly thick) cause the front dial and the back dial (a little less) to be more recessed ALMOST to the point where I can't feel the dial like I'd like. They will work but when you are blindly feeling for the dial at an odd angle they are not as pronounced.- On the D850, near where your thumb would rest by the rise on top of the left corner of the SD door, this is where my thumb tends to push on the cover and cause it to slide. I do not think this will be much of a problem and I hope it will not be enough to cause the whole cover to become misaligned, but I do not think so. I stuck this little tid bit in there so that maybe a year from now I let you know if I've considered it a problem.- This has a hot shoe cover that would flop out and be in your way as you are installing a speedlight or other hot shoe attachments (bubble levels and what-not) but I like it because it adds more water repelency and protection from electronic short if you are near water waves or ocean spray etc. Not sure this is a con as I think its a pro but if you like bubble levelers more than camera protection then its a con.All in all, I think this is a good idea, not perfect, but short of framing your camera with video cages I do not think there's an answer to total protection from dropping into the Grand Canyon or hard hits with a ball bat, etc. But this ain't no GoPro and I need any added protection I can get. If needed I'll take it off temporarily for whatever reasons. If you drop your camera, my experience is the lens takes most of the damage and there's not much protection for long drops other than custom sleeves and video cages. I will shop for the custom sleeves for the long lens (as that's where most of my money is anyway) and use tethers to prevent dropping, but this cover is a good start to protecting my equipment. If I was a professional with unlimited funds to buy equipment, I would not want this as its an annoyance.I should add the seller and Amazon (prime) were a good buying experience for my order.
