If the male end is connected to a mic input with phantom power, you need only the male tool to test the cable. There are other tools which can detect a mic or line signal from the male end of the cable. **Q: I own the xlr sniffer tool .. i was told they make the same kind for 1/4" ts and trs ! where can find this one ?** A: So glad you find the XLR Sniffer/Sender so useful! The TRS (1/4") version of the tester is not currently available due to a redesign, but will be made available again some time soon! **Q: Do you make a 5 pin version ?** A: The SoundTools DMX Sniffer/Sender is a 5 PIN tester that tests pins 1-3 for continuity. **Q: How long of a run is this tester rated for?** A: When testing standard XLR cables, 1000 feet is generally recommended. We have successfully tested lines up to 2000 feet.
