Otherwise the entire piece will float to the top of the tank and blow water into the lid of the aquarium. -I did as some had suggested in previous reviews and plugged the strip in before placing it in the aquarium to help ensure there would be no clogging. The bubbles were great at first but after only a week there were only around 5 strands working. I've tried wiping off the strip too. It's not the end of the world but it sure was cooler looking when all of them were functioning. -I was surprised by how loud this item is. I've gotten used to the sound but I don't know that it's good for my fish. Overall I'm not happy with the product. It wasn't cheap and certainly not worth the money that I spent on it.
