A Schoolgirl's Work: Samplers from the Spencer Museum of Art Paperback – August 16, 2011

This book is loaded with beautiful pictures and information. I loved seeing how wonderfully some of these young women used their time to create these beautiful samplers. There is also some patterns in the back of the book. This books proceeds also benefits the museum where these samplers are housed. This book is well written and the authors went as far as to research the seamstresses lives. I loved this book and considered it money well spent.

The handwork of the girls featured in this book is truly amazing!!I am in my mid-forties don't have the half the skill of some of the young girls (ages 8yrs to 19 yrs) featured in this book. I can look at this book over and over and never see all the detail of the samplers shown. I would highly recommend this book if you are looking for some historic pieces to reproduce.

A must have for any cross stitcher. It is beyond eye candy, which it is!, but a plenty of projects that are practical and beautiful. Enjoy!

The photographs of the antique samplers included in this book are lovely, yet there is no real content regarding the samplers nor are there any actual charts to reproduce the samplers. There are eleven pincushion-size projects that are "inspired" by the antique samplers but you would have a very hard time figuring out which sampler inspired the project without the notation as they don't even closely resemble antique samplers. I have to say I was very disappointed in this book. It was not at all what I was expecting.

Lovely pictures and descriptions of young girls samplers from the museum. It is amazing that such young girts were able to stitch these intricate pieces. Instructions for several nice small projects inspired by the samplers are included. I would have liked patterns for one or two full sized samplers to be included but were not.
