I'm constantly having to clean the head to get rid of "flashing" of the picture on my computer screen. For this reason, I took the lid off the VCR so I have constant easy access to clean the VCR head when it gets dirty. These old tapes leave dust and grime on the VCR head, sometimes as often a after every cassette is processed. I don't have an expensive computer but I am putting the content directly onto an external hard drive. Im running it on an older xp system i keep in the garage. You have to record the tapes from your vcr in real time (manually stop capture/recording), but the system includes a basic editor so if you forget and capture an extra 5mins to 3 hours of footage you can trim it after and even convert the file from mpeg2 to AVI (can even change quality in case you want/need smaller files). Only issue im having is a few random tapes (like 5 of the 20 ive ripped) have capture issues and stutter. Its not the tape as i have an AV signal splitter and watched the tape on a seperate tv while the PC was also capturing. The tv displayed the tape just fine while the pc had issues. I know the preview doesnt always reflect the actual data pull, but i watched it to check and the issue was still there. Im thinking its some kind of copy protection on the tapes (which shouldnt happen since most tapes were made to stop vcr to vcr recording and this treats it basically like recording a stream on your tv). Checked the cables, reinstalled, but issue persisted. Funny thing is the tape plays perfect on TV and i can swap to a different tape and have the capture work just fine again.
