Contains orders well.
This compost container does a surprisingly good job of containing orders, which is great because I keep it on the countertop right next to the sink. I never detect any odor, as long as the lid is on.This is the second of these I have purchased. I am replacing the first one because the handle fell off. It received a lot of use over several years before that happened. Everything wears out eventually, so I didn’t let that deter me from buying the same exact one a second time.

A composter that could work better
Overall:This is a stainless steel composter which can be placed on your table top or directly outside your kitchen. Whichever place you decide to locate it, this bin certainly makes for easy disposal of composting. The stainless steel material definitely makes for easy cleaning as I usually spray the bin with water once a week. The handle makes the bin incredibly easy to move for disposal as the entire can is extremely light weight. The bin has a lid with ventilation and a pad to keep the smells away. This lid could be a good thing, but I have noticed that it in fact makes this composter a little less effective than a non-lidded style. You see, the lid seems to act against the bin by trapping in smells. Also, just from observation, when using this composter with the lid, it seems to harbor more fruit flies than a non lidded bin. In fact, the flies seem to prefer laying eggs/maggots on the under side of the lid which can be very disgusting. Generally speaking, this bin is very good due to the stainless steel composition, but you may want to try it without the lid itself or perhaps another brand that does not come with a lid. And, which ever one you choose, make sure to dispose regularly, at least once a week to keep the bugs and smells away.Pros:-Lightweight-Good construction-Sturdy-Utilitarian but good looking-Easy to clean-Lid keeps compost out of sightCons:-Harbors fruit flies-Lid traps smellsRecommendation to Purchase:Sure, it works well, but be prepared to use without the lid, one of the bins' biggest selling features.

Really very good. Could be improved a bit.
I have had this compost bucket for about 18 months now,and it is generally working very well. It's quite large, and catches scraps for just me and my wife. So we only need to empty it about once a week. We really have no odor problem, and only rarely see fruit flies. It has no rust at all after 18 months. The only negative is that the top is a little weird. The top is made of 2 pieces that just fit together with a pressure fit -- there is nothing that really secures the two pieces together. So sometimes when I pull the top off the can, the two pieces come apart and I have to try to put the back together while I'm trying to dump some scraps in the can. It's not a huge problem but an annoyance. It seems like it would be easy enough for the manufacturer to figure out a better way of securing the two parts of the top together. If they did that, this product would deserve 5 stars.

Good little Pail
This is a great little pail. The 1.5 gallon size is perfect for me and I only have to empty it once a week, or close to it. It was actually bigger than I thought it would be. I needed to empty one gallon containers every night or two. No smell, no nats and the handle is attached well and is good and strong. The stainless steel cleans easily and does not hold any odors; one quick rinse under the facuet and it is ready for the next load. It looks ok sitting on the counter which makes it very convenient to use. It is not what I would call "pretty," but it is much better looking than an old coffee can :) It is nice enough that the wife "allows" it on the counter and big enough to keep me happy. The lid seals well enough to prevent smells, but comes off easy enough that you can open it even with hands full of veggie trimming; just lift it off. No catches or twisting required.I considered a pottery jar, but I wanted something a little larger. Also, I am a little rough on things and would have broken it within a year or two. The stainless steel will last me forever. It may end up with a few dents, but it will still hold my trimmings! This is a fair price for a high quality product that does exactly what it says it will do.

Overpriced, but pretty great
This is the second year I've been composting and since I'm sticking with it I decided to splurge on this. I definately think it is overpriced..it's a pretty simple product, so the price isn't justified in my opininon...that being said, I still gave it 4 stars because it's a great product! Before getting this, I was just using old plastic containers. Don't get me wrong, they work perfectly...but they get kinda gross after a while and don't hold nearly as much as the real one. You don't have to make trips outside as often because the Norpro holds a lot and keeps the smell inside. Even when I open it to add stuff..no horrible smell (even though I can clearly see the decomp/mold action going on inside).Because I haven't emptied it yet, I don't know what the clean up process will be like...but based on reviews, it doesn't seem like it will be that bad.If you are serious about composting, I say splurge and get this..it makes it easier : )

I wish I had bought this long before I did
This is a great product, and was a reasonable price! It holds a lot of vegetable waste, and the filters really work to keep it from smelling as long as the lid is on! You'll have to make sure everyone in the family understands that the holes in the lid are for ventilation, NOT for putting in small pieces of food waste! My husband put a few peach pits in there before I realized what he was doing. The pits were then resting on top of the filters, and were not easy to get out. We had been using a plastic container that originally held 4 pounds of potato salad to hold food waste, and had to empty it every day or two. That was a pain, especially in the winter, when we had to dig a path through the snow to the compost pile. The smell could get bad, and the plastic absorbed & held the odors as well. I usually empty this one well before it's full, but once did a test to see how well the filters work - didn't empty it for 10 days, and there was no odor unless we lifted the lid off. I highly recommend this compost keeper.
