A very tall shelf? Away from canned foods?** A: Uranium ore is primarily an alpha emitter. Alpha rays are detectable for only a couple of inches from their source, then they "die". They are too weak to penetrate human skin and are therefore quite safe as long as they are not ingested or inhaled. An alpha ray is essentially a Helium atom without the electrons. It is not until Uranium ore is "enriched" that it becomes hazardous. **Q: whats the cpm count average of these samples?** A: Hard to say since the sample is too small . Normal CPM readings taken with a pancake probe measure a sample at least as big in area as the pancake. The measurement therefore is a total of everything under the pancake. Since this sample doesn't come close to being as large (or larger) than the pancake, any reading would be inaccurate. The box of pieces I use for these bottles measures 5000 to 6000 CPM when a large sample is measured. Hope this makes sense. **Q: I have a gmc300plus. will it show an elevated cpm? i would like a substance to test my counter.** A: Dan, After researching the gmc300plus I'm fairly certain that raw uranium ore would have only a minor (if any) effect on your machine. Radiation emitted from uranium ore is almost entirely alpha particle radiation. Most detectors will only sense and "count" beta and gamma radiation. Check the manufacturer's specs you got with your machine to see if it can detect and measure alpha particles. If it can, my samples will definitely move your CPM dial. I was worried I would be wasting my money. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1star reviewer doesn’t understand cheap Geiger counters can’t detect alpha particles-only beta/gamma *by I***S on June 28, 2021* I didnt buy this product idk sellers, but I feel like the person who gave this seller a 1star review because their Geiger counter didn’t register much above ambient radiation doesn’t understand that most non-pro, cheap Geiger counters can’t detect alpha emissions only daughter particles, beta/gamma radiation of the U ore sample which is not the fault of the seller. Additionally, only have one GM tube [example of an entry level radex or GQ-GMC3...(300/320, below <500 which has 2 tubes, 1 specifically for reading low-level beta/gamma emissions), a entry level gmc320, or gmc300E or gmc300+ isn’t going to be able to detect alpha at all, or be accurate at low levels anyway. Even the 500+ @60seconds is +/-5%. Not really the fault of seller, more the novice detector + end user misunderstanding.
