A wonderful throwback with a modern approach
I came late to the party regarding table top RPG's. My children and I started in 4th edition, and I've enjoyed collecting older versions of DnD for reference as well as insight into current mechanics and development. I discovered BFRPG trolling around for legitimate free stuff in the tabletop hobby. What a great game!First off, Thanks to Chris and the BFRPG contributors for putting this into the hands of gamers for free. These guys make no money from the sale of the core rules and supplements. This game is an extension of the love of the hobby- Buy the books here or on Lulu at cost, or download the .pdf's for free at basicfantasy.org- thank you, Chris!I first downloaded the .pdf, then purchased the spiral bound copy on Lulu. I was a bit disappointed in the overall package from Lulu. The tips of the spiral binding material dug into the paper and glossy cover when flipping through the book. It gnarled up the pages some. Also, the printing was a bit dark, as if the copier was not catching the detail in the black and white drawings. It was acceptable, just not perfect. The Amazon copy is much cheaper and overall better quality. The perfect bound spine is well done and the detail in the B&W drawings is better- the picture of the displacer beast is a fine example. Additionally, shipping is free if you tack it on to a larger order. I recommend getting your printed copy here.If your a modern RPGer, this may be a bit thin for your liking. The rules are complete, but allow lots of wiggle for the GM, especially in combat. 3rd/Pathfinder/4th edition offer a great deal more structure within the game. This may be a draw for you, but my children (13 and under) actually prefer the heavier rule set of 4th edition. We played a pick-up game and noticed a few things:Character creation is greatly simplified, but takes longer than you might think. Add equipment and spell choices and I'd say your looking at 40 min to create a character. After you learn the book it may go faster, but I can't see less than 30 min with all the choices and page flipping. I believe you'd have to settle for "good enough for this adventure" in that time frame. Consider character creation prior to getting together for the session to speed things up. Better to make 2 or 3 characters to have on hand, considering the next point.Characters are frail. Really. TPK's not uncommon in low level basic encounters. Additionally, they are distinctly unheroic with less powers, feats, and special skills at low levels than modern RPG's. You might like this, my players didn't.Combat goes fast and easy, but it's deadly. It's a little frustrating to put an hour into creating a party only to be killed in 15 min by low level vermin. Throwback structure includes re-rolling initiative each round and moral checks. Something to get used too for modern gamers!Ascending AC is applied to old school mechanics- a wonderful design choice.Overall the game is great fun. I enjoyed our short run with the rules. The book is well written and orderly. The art represents the throwback style of the game, and is very nice. My kids prefer the rules heavy stuff and 1st level characters that are heroic and sturdy from the start. It's worth a look (even if you never get to play) just to understand more about the history of where the game once was while being blessed with using some modern mechanics to resolve game play. BFRPG gets an "A" from me.Paper is easier on the eyes than .pdf's. At this price, you can't go wrong.

A great start for Fantasy RPG playing
In the late 1970's, Games Magazine had an article Basic Dungeons and Dragons, now known as the Blue Box. So I sought it out. The blue box had everything you needed to start playing D&D. As a teen, these books fascinated me. It was a great introduction to role playing games. The Basic Fantasy book is pretty much the same book, with updates. For someone young, say 8-16, this is a great book, especially for someone playing on a budget. The book is also available free at basicfantasy.org. It's an open gaming license, everything is available free -- the price here is the printing cost. There are four races (human, elf, dwarf, halfling) and four classes (fighter, cleric, magic user, thief). For a beginner, this is likely the best introduction, since some of the more modern systems need 400+ dense pages, and can be overwhelming. This is a simple system, based strongly on D&D 3.5, but pared down to the basic elements. For people wanting more, search for d20 SRD. which is the free version of the current D&D. There's also a free Pathfinder SRD. But a PDF isn't quite as nice of a gift as a book. These are well-printed, in black and white, on nice paper. There is plenty of room for writing notes and alternate rules, which should be highly encouraged. For more advanced budget players, Savage Worlds is a great deal.I more got this as a kicker when I purchased some of the modules. The modules are excellently made, and hew close to the original D&D modules from 1978-1982.If you have any of the D&D or Pathfinder core books, you don't need this one. Look at it online. If you're looking for a gift, though, this is an excellent alternative to a $100+ set of core books.

basic is excellent
Basic Fantasy RPG combines the best of the old school basic and expert dungeons and dragons (boxed set games from 1981) with modern D20 game mechanics. This lean and flexible system allows players and game masters to run the game with the rules as written, or to incorporate any number of house rules. Why should you buy and play Basic Fantasy RPG?The core rulebook has everything you need to play. Character classes and races, combat, monsters, exploration, encounters at sea and in the air, treasure tables. Want more? The author's website offers additional classes, races, rule options, and adventures for downloading - FREE.Rules light lets you focus on role-playing and the setting and story elements of your adventures. High fantasy or gritty low magic settings. The system is flexible enough for the players and game master to play the campaign they want to play.Quick and deadly combat. Take a break from 4e and Pathfinder. Your reward will be more combat encounters in each game session. No more one hour combat encounters that feel like a meeting between tax accountants. You cannot beat the price. Mr. Gonnerman sells hard copies of the book at 0% profit. The price you pay is for the ink, paper, and binding.Check out Basic Fantasy RPG. Then hunt some orcs.

An excellent Old School Rules RPG. Highly recommended.
Whether you fondly remember playing Basic D&D in your youth and want to relive that or you are an experienced gamer who wants to try out an OSR game with a very small rules footprint you really can't go far wrong with Basic Fantasy. The pdf is available free and the print version is so cheap it's amazing.I found myself trying to choose between Basic Fantasy and Labyrinth Lord and (other than the price) what finally sold me on this was that Armour Class followed the ascending D&D 3/Pathfinder model (starting at 10 and then going up) rather than the old school descending system. It's so much easier to add bonuses to a dice roll and see if that betters the opponents AC than it is to roll, add bonuses and then look it up to see if it hits a -2 AC.Not sure what else to say, I wanted an OSR system to try out and am very happy with my purchase. I've used the system to run a group through an old AD&D adventure (Unhallowed Ground) and found it very easy to use. The group had a great time and I'm looking forward to using it on some traditional dungeon delves in the future (probably ones from Dyson's Dodecahedron).

Great little game
This a "Retro Clone" of the 1980's version of "Basic" Dungeons and Dragons. It does a few things different like it doesn't have racial classes and it has a borrowed from Third edition ascending amour classes but its basically the same game which you can use to run the old D&D modules, any of new stuff being made by the OSR or adventures of your own creation. The Rules are clearly written and well laid out and are available for free as a pdf file from [...]. There is also range of supplemental material available at the same web site. The price is great but the book is a fragile thing, mine is already showing scuff marks and has a damaged spine after a few days. I have marked a star off for this. If you want a more substantial book hard back versions and coil bound editions are also available from the web site

Great system at the price
So coming back to D&D after many years to start running my kids through it I didn't dare throw them into AD&D I wanted something simpler. There is no mor basic D&D though. However there is this sold at cost it makes a fantasic buy for a entry level RPG. In my opinion this is exactly the right amount of rules for an RPG enough to regulate the main parts in a fair way, but not so many you are endlessly poring through booklets. Let the DM and players come up with customisations in the framework as they go.

Spot on
Book was what I wanted and at a very good price. Easily adaptable and, with the exception of a lack of alignment system and reversed AC (like in 3ED&D+) very faithful to the red box D&D rules.
