Neurocomic: A Comic About the Brain Hardcover – April 15, 2014

I was worried when I ordered it that it wouldn't be detailed enough to give me new information, but I figured it'd be worth a shot. This is clearly written, has some great information with great visuals, and has some really great metaphors that bring the information home. A great study guide that while written with college level detail is presented in a way that anyone that wants to learn would be able to understand. I need to see what else Hana Ros has written. This is such a great and fun way to learn.

A quick, entertaining read through the brain. Neat introduction to how our brains works and an excellent gift for children and adults alike. Made me wish the authors would pair up to draw/write more in-depth graphic novels for medical students or college students interested in the matter.

This is a great example of a "model". You can almost see the careful craftsman's fingerprints.

A quirky graphic work on the brain which involves a journey, but its resemblance to Alice and Wonderland ends at that. It has some mildly amusing puns and adequate illustrations and succeeds in being an entertaining general introduction to neurophysiology at a detailed, if not elementary level. The humor is not commensurate with Lewis Carroll's nor are the illustrations quite to the level of Tennant. Unless it were to be serialized, it is doubtful that it could encompass even some 5 % of the material that might be explored. As an introduction to nerve form, general function and an introduction to neurotransmitter action it suffices admirably. Such concepts as lateralization of functions, dominance, plasticity, localization of some functions, coordinated opposition or feedback system in fine control and more - as to all of this there is no illumination. To cover all of this material would be much more difficult although this type of format might allow some sequel serving such an exposition.As far as a trip, this is more an entertaining picnic outing than it is a grand tour. It is cute and modestly useful. As a learning tool, its limitations need to be taken into consideration.

There is, of course, much more to say. But this clears the mind; it says what a neuron is, as far as current science knows, in an afterworld in which the founders of neuroscience live on inside the axons and neurons and synapses they invented and named. And in the end, what you are is ions and chemicals, but it's also what you think you are. Does this make sense? Maybe, eventually; something for which to hope.

I found Neurocomic a really creative book to provide a reader with a basic introduction to aspects of the workings of the brain. In my opinion, the book spends too much time reflecting on neuroscientists where it could have provided more content about the various structures of the brain - which I felt the book only barely accomplished. I was disappointed that the authors did not use this creative medium to explain the anatomy and function of more parts of the brain. The creative genius of the book cannot be overstated - the imaginative forces that developed this book are remarkable. It is a fun and artfully drawn book that would be enjoyable for readers to explore.

What I really loved about it is the multiple levels of accessibility: it has information that anyone, ranging from elementary to PhD, would find interesting. Perhaps the only caveat is that you can read it in under an hour, it is very brief.Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in neuroscience.

I have studies neuroscience and this illustrated book is the only one I have found so far that is an accurate intro to neuroscience. The illustrator found brilliant ways to depict what the science behind it all is. I would recommend this book to children and adults who would like to see neuroscience through a fun eye!

Da studente di scienze cognitive e interessato alle neuroscienze, ero già a conoscenza di quanto esposto in questo graphic novel, ma, seppur una lettura brevissima, il libro è molto divertente e ben fatto. Presenta argomenti come il funzionamento dei neurotrasmettitori e della comunicazione neurale in modo chiaro e allettante, e soprattutto dentro una cornice narrative d'avventura, riminiscente di Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie. Il libro in sé è ben curato, con una copertina rigida che definire bella è riduttivo. Consiglio la lettura sia a chi è del settore e vuole prendersi una pausa da monografie pesanti e pubblicazioni accademiche, sia a chi non sa nulla del cervello ma ne è incuriosito. In Italia il libro è edito da Rizzoli, e consiglio la lettura in italiano a quei giovani lettori e lettrici che dimostrano curiosità per le scienze; il libro è un ottimo modo per simolarli ulteriormente.
