It Came From the Desert

A colony of BIG ants is more than just an IT Came from the Desert. Like most ants, they are drawn to a picnic and there’s one in the desert, serving up their favorite treat: beer. And people prove to be a slightly salty snack as well. It’s up to two bickering friends, one is an abject idiot, the other almost brainy enough, and the girl of desire, to save the day and a few partygoers.In the right frame of mind, this is very entertaining. I do love big ants. Yes, it’s silly, but it’s also fun.

Warning: SPOILERS!!! IT CAME FROM THE DESERT (2018), based on the early-'80s 8-bit video game of the same name, starts out well enough, but then completely falls apart. Three typical young adults, Brian (Harry Lister Smith), Lisa (Vanessa Grasse) and air-headed Lukas (Alex Mills, who reminds me of a young Timothy Olyphant), head out to a booze-filled weekend of partying and motocross riding, when they discover a hidden laboratory in a cave that houses giant ants. It's not long before these ants escape and attack everyone at the party, bringing their still-alive bodies back to their nest to feed their queen. It is up to this trio, who have serious personal problems (Brian loves Lisa and doesn't know she feels the same way, thinking she like Lukas better), to free the others before they become chow for the queen and kill all the ants before they get to civilization and multiply quickly to take over the world. That's the basic plot of this Finland-lensed flick, directed by Marko Mäkilaakso (WAR OF THE DEAD - 2011), who co-wrote the generic screenplay with Hank Woon Jr. and Trent Haaga (DEADGIRL - 2008). The CGI and anamatronic giant ants are very well done, better than films with ten times the budget, but the acting and plot leave a lot to be desired. Only Alex Mills manages to register in his role of Lukas, as the rest of the cast, including the minor players, are weak imprints of the way real people would act when put in situations this film offers. It's all played rather broadly and, as a viewer, we know exactly what is going to happen next and it does, no surprises or twists are on view. This is not a badly made film, just a typical DTV horror/actioner. The photography is very well done for such a low budget affair, especially the motocross scenes, as people try to escape the invading giant ants on their motorcycles, but it is a losing proposition because the ants are faster. As a player of the actual video game, I can attest to the fact that this film follows the game very closely, but what is fun on the computer is very cliched as a film, which proves one thing to me: video games should not be turned into films because more times than naught, they are very boring and tepid. For its budget, this is a very well made film, but the story is lacking in entertainment value. Stay through the end credits for a view of a full replay of the entire video game. If you have ever played it, nostalgia will rush over your body like a cold wave of ocean water.

Fun B movie. I enjoyed this one. If you are looking for a serious science fiction movie, this is NOT it. If you're looking for an hour and a half of silly, juvenile, slapstick, party in the desert, unrealistic syfy with decent special effects and a story line that doesn't take itself too seriously; you've found it! Forget your problems and grab a beer while rooting the motocross boys as they fight off the hoards of giant ants. Will they survive? Will they save the town? Will be win the heart of the girl he secretly loves before the ant queen can rip it from her chest? The answers to these questions and more can only be found it you watch the movie - or Google it. Watching the movie is way more fun!

It is by no means a AAA movie, but it does not need to be. When I watch these type of movies I want goofy characters and plots. Acting is good and for a B movie the special affects were good too for what it is. It does a good job of making goofy period references and not taking its self seriously, but being fun. "By the power of Greyskull", random power ranger poses, and laughing ants made it worthwhile for me.

I should never expect much from this type of film. But what saddened me were all the lost opportunities. Giant ant were cool, and there were some good shots of motocross stunt riders, but it could have been ever worse/better. I love bad cinema, but bad film makers still should be inventive. There was one scene (only one!) where they displayed subtitles of the ant bickering (hilarious!), a device that was never used again. They could have used this more than once to illustrate how the ants were just as inane as the humans. The movie was advertised as motorcycles, babes and giant bugs, but there were no babes!!! A good example is Piranha 3D, which maybe had a little too much hooters.

I even remember playing the game. I thought it was really well done funny cheesy campy b-movie. I could even watch this again it was that good to me. The story felt more real. Two curious kids wondering around the desert and finds a cave entrance. Loads of fun. Definitely recommend it. If you like "Them" in 1954 you will definitely like this one. Will they make a second one?

So silly I didn't bother to watch the whole thing.

Bigfoot the Movie is my favorite comedy spoof, and this one is quickly becoming #2; everything seems to work, from the idiots to the heroes; I have been waiting since the 60s for a new killer ant movie, and this thriller comedy was well worth my time; third time watching - so far.

Bon petit film pour amateurs de series B qui sortent directement en vidéo, mais cela veut dire bien entendu petit budget... Il faudra de plus attendre une bonne demie heure pour voir la première fourmi, réalisée avec des images de synthèses de qualité, ce qui est primordial. Ensuite, il faut apprécier la réalisation, sinon le film est nul : ce qui implique un bon scénar' et plein de bonnes petites idées. IT CAME FROM THE DESERT réunit toutes ces qualités et prouve son ingéniosité et son originalité avec une orientation très "comédie", ce qui lui donne un bon rythme, aussi. Presque pas d'effets gore ici, on est souvent dans l'esprit franche rigolade ( Comment faire, à votre avis, pour éviter qu'un insecte gros comme un buffet de salle à manger - et qui vous course avec une certaine intention, comprenez bien - ne vous fasse disparaître entre ses mandibules ? Dès qu'elle saute, BAISSEZ-VOUS, PARDI !! La bébête ira se cogner contre le mur d'en face après une bonne petite glissade ! ) teinté d'un humour assez noir, cependant. Les textes sont irrésistibles ( Une réplique notamment hilarante : Bon Dieu, de Jurrassic park, on est passé à Alien, mec !, commente l'un des ados crétins en parlant des décors, il ajoutera : Moi, si ma vie était un film, ce serait Gorge profonde ! ), les ados n'arrêtant pas de se vanner d'une manière plus ou moins salée : il est ici question de sexe et d'alcool, et tous les clichés y passent, pour parodier le "teenage movie", le machisme et même l'héroïsme américain. Seuls défauts, les effets spéciaux se font parcimonieux (Juste une fourmi par-ci par-là ), et la plus grande teneur en action du film concernera un passage avec poursuite à motos dans le désert, fourmis géantes ( Enfin bon bref, la routine, quoi ) et ados affolés, d'une durée de trois minutes environ. De plus, ils auraient dû se décarcasser davantage pour le final manquant de spectaculaire. Four stars, c'est "J'adore", et trois, c'est "Ouais, c'est pas mal mais ça pourrait être mieux". Je le conseille, mais ça vaut pas ARAC ATTACK.

If you’re in the mood for some big bug b-movie nonsense, you could do far worse than pick this up. It cleverly plays with the tropes of the genre, sending them up in an affectationate rather than mean-spirited manner. Some of the gags don’t land, but the majority do, and the whole thing is entertainingly dumb. If you enjoyed THEM! and now want something lighter, this will do the trick nicely.

Kritik:In Zeiten stetiger Angriffe durch immer neuartige Hai-Mutationen bedarf es zwischenzeitlich auch gern eine andere Spezies, die sich um das dezimieren besonders dummdreister Geschöpfe, namentlich Mensch, kümmert. Da die Ameise in Übergröße seit "Formicula" aus dem Jahre 1954 nicht mehr allzu oft gesehen wurde, erfreut es umso mehr dieses Tierchen einmal wieder über die heimische Leinwand flitzen zu sehen. Ein weiterer, zumindest gedachter Pluspunkt, die Verfilmung eines Kultgames aus dem Amiga-Zeitalter aus dem Hause Cinemaware.Ameisen, Amiga und Cinemaware? Die Rede ist natürlich von "It Came From The Desert" aus dem Jahre 1989. Schon verwunderlich, dass man den Stoff der Geschichte nicht schon früher zu Film brachte. So nutzten 2017 einige findige Finnen die Idee um daraus einen Spielfilm zu kreieren. In nur 20 Tagen abgedreht und mit einem Budget von gerade einmal 1 Millionen US-Dollar dürfen sich die Ameisen endlich wieder austoben.Hierbei belebt Regisseur Marko Mäkilaakso recht ordentlich das Subgenre des Tierhorror und bietet oftmals Hommagen an die 1980er Jahre mit seiner Art der Inszenierung. Hierbei sollte man nicht auf eine allzu große Charakterisierung der Figuren hoffen, denn im Grunde sind die Stars des Films eben die Ameisen.So gehen einem auch die Darsteller mehr oder weniger schon nach kurzer Zeit auf die Nerven und man wartet eigentlich nur auf die nächste Ameisenwelle und die damit verbundene Vernichtung der Protagonisten. Wobei die Figuren genau so angelegt wurden und nur das wiederspiegeln, was man damals als gut befunden hat; herrlich trashig und doch völlig peinlich in ihrem tun.Die Ameisen selbst sind natürlich keine richtigen Ameisen, es wäre ja auch zu langweilig. Es handelt sich um genmutierte Kreuzungen aus Ameise, Spinne und Alien-DNA, welche dafür sorgt das die Biester noch gefährlicher sind und nicht nur schnell sind und springen können, sondern auch untereinander Witze erzählen oder ordentlich Husten bekommen. Kein Scherz, wer erstmal die Ameisen beim Kichern belauscht hat, wird selber sein Zwerchfell zu spüren bekommen.Die Effekte und die Ameisen selber sind eine Mischung aus CGI und handgemachten Attrappen. Diese sind zwar nicht perfekt aber deutlich besser als die ganzen Riesenviecher aus dem Hause The Asylum oder SyFy. Ein weiterer sehr positiver Aspekt ist der Stil, den Marko Mäkilaakso an den Tag legt und "It Came From The Desert" nicht allzu ernst nimmt. Er wusste genau was er da fabriziert und dies kommt ihm auch zugute. Von der sehr dünnen Handlung wird mit krude Ideen, teils stylischen Actionszenen und einer doch flotten Inszenierung abgelenkt. Und zu guter Letzt wird im Abspann auch noch ein Walkthroug vom Game geboten.Technik:Beim Bild gibt es nicht wirklich etwas zu bemängeln. Aufgrund der Handlung dominieren meist gelb-bräunliche Töne, was in Anbetracht der Wüste hervorragend passt. Die Schärfe ist in Ordnung, dennoch wäre deutlich mehr möglich gewesen. Hier scheint aber auch das Budget als auch die Technik eine Rolle zu spielen, da gerade dann wenn die Ameisen ins Bild kommend er Schärfegrad abnimmt. Zudem ist die Durchzeichnung der Details nur in hellen Bereichen wirklich optimal und nimmt in dunklen Passagen ab. Hier ist es definitiv ein Problem der Schwarzwerte, die eher zu einem dunkelgrau tendieren. Besser macht es der Kontrast, der meistens sehr ausgewogen auftritt.Beide Sprachfassungen (Deutsch und Englisch) wurden in verlustfreiem DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 abgemischt, wobei der Originalton homogener und etwas kräftiger klingt als das deutsche Pendant. Beide Tonspuren klingen allerdings recht frontlastig, können aber hin und wieder mit ein paar gut platzierten Effekten aufwarten. Hauptsächlich werden die Rears beim rockigen Soundtrack eingesetzt. Insgesamt kann man von einer soliden Räumlichkeit sprechen, die jedoch ein atmosphärisches Mittendrin-Gefühl missen lässt. Dialoge sind in beiden Fassungen sehr gut zu verstehen und klingen selbst in Actionszenen gut verständlich. Optional gibt es deutsche Untertitel.Als Bonus gibt es leidglich den Trailer zum Film sowie weiteren Trailern des Anbieters.Fazit:Netter kleiner Trash, der auch genauso das sein will, was er jetzt ist. Im Zuge zahlreicher Haie oder anderweitigen Viehzeug aus dem Wasser eine gelungene Abwechslung. Wer sich vor Riesenameisen, dummen Menschen und billigen Tricks nicht scheut, der darf zugreifen.
