THE REMEMBERED VILLAGE, SECOND EDITION (OIP)

It is wonderful book. The language is simple. It gives an account of village life of India just before Independence. It will tell you that caste is not all that bad. It shows how communities were interdependent in a village setting before modernization. The writer is a doyen of Indian sociology. I recommend this book for everyone.

This book is a classic I have been searching for it for some time from stores. I am glad I found it in Amazon. It recounts in minute detail the lives and social interactions in a South Indian village over 65 years ago. The remarkable point of this anthropological narrative is that the author wrote it from memory as all his notebooks and records were destroyed in a fire! It is an amazing work of dedicated scholarship.

यह पुस्तक श्री निवास की भारतीय ग्राम संबंधी विस्तृत सामग्री उजागर करती है साथ ही इससे जुड़े सभी स्रोतों पर प्रकाश डालने की कोशिश भी करती है । श्रीनिवास जन्म 1916 में मैसूर में हुआ था और उनकी मृत्यु 1999 में बैंगलोर में हुई थी। वह भारत के अब तक के सबसे प्रसिद्ध समाजशास्त्रियों में है । उनका जन्म और पालन-पोषण एक ब्राह्मण घर में हुआ था, और उन्होंने जाति और इसकी अन्य श्रेणियों पर महत्वपूर्ण समाजशास्त्रीय,नृवंशविज्ञान (Anthropology)में अनुसंधान किया। उन्होंने जाति के बारे में आवश्यक अवधारणाओं को भी प्रस्तावित किया, जैसे प्रभु जातियां, संस्कृतिकरण, पश्चिमीकरण । उन्होंने बॉम्बे विश्वविद्यालय ऑक्सफोर्ड विश्वविद्यालय में अपनी शिक्षा प्राप्त की , समाजशास्त्रीय जगत में वह अपने समकालीन कई साथियों की तरह मानव मानव विज्ञान की सिर्फ पाठ्यपुस्तक (Bookview) पर निर्भर नहीं थे, इसलिए श्रीनिवास का समाजशास्त्र के प्रति दृष्टिकोण काफी अलग था। वे सूक्ष्म फील्डवर्क ( Field View) और सहभागी अवलोकन के एक समर्थक थे।

As a new anthropology student, this is the first ethnography I have read - and it is wonderful. Really more like a novel, beautifully written by an empathetic, intelligent author who is obviously passionate about his country and his subject. If I were to criticise at all, it is slightly old-fashioned and one-sided but it flows like poetry in places and was eminently readable (which is not something I can say about every anthropological text...). Recommended not only to students of India, anthropology and sociology but to anyone who enjoys a knowledgeable, inspiring and peaceful book.
