Would prefer concave buttons
I started out with the grip master light tension. This was too much resistance for my little finger, so I bought the grip master extralight tension. The combination of these two units allowed me to gradually strengthen my fingers to the point that I was ready for the medium tension (seven pounds resistance). I decided I would buy the more expensive grip master PRO unit with seven pounds resistance. I like it, but I'm not sure it's preferable to the slightly less expensive REGULAR grip master unit. The rubber surface on the buttons is easier on my fingertips, but because the buttons are convex rather than concave, my fingers tend to slide off the buttons more than on the regular grip master, which has concave but non-rubber buttons. Both units seem reasonably durable, and they are inexpensive enough from Amazon that if I ever wear one of them out, I can buy another one with no problem. This is a great way to strengthen your fingers, and it has improved my ability to play the piano and the guitar significantly within about six weeks of use. I keep the units in my briefcase and use them when I am reading something at work. This does not interfere with my reading, and it allows me to give my fingers a good workout. It has also improved my speed and control typing on a computer keyboard. I'm not sure which is preferable - the regular grip master or the grip master pro. I think you would probably be happy with either one. I do like the shape of the rubber surface that presses against the palm of my hand better on the grip master pro than on the regular grip master. If I had to do it again, I think I would buy the regular grip master with the concave buttons. NOTE: Be sure to use this device by pushing the buttons with your fingerTIPS, not the flat part of your fingers. You will not be able to handle as much resistance this way, but it will strengthen your fingers in a different way, and in a way that is important to playing a musical instrument.

Gripmaster Pro proves to be a medical device
This product far exceeded my expectations. I have had the product for 18 days. Four months ago, I tripped and caught myself with my hands, most of my weight was on my left hand. Unfortunately, as a 44 year old male, my fingers did not heal as quickly as I thouht they should. I was preparing to make an appt with an ortho Doctor, but, I thought I would give this product a try. My fingers were constantly in pain. I am someone who works out 3-4x each week. I can run 5 mi without stopping. I was shocked that I was in this pain just from catching myself from a fall. 1) My hand started improving within 72 hours--I'm not kidding. 2) My fingers were noticeably stronger in 1 full week. 3) The constant pain in my fingers have completely left--I thought I was enroute to surgery On a scale of 1 to 10, I was a 3 when I began using this device 18 days ago. Today, I am a solid 8. I am extremely pleased with this turnaround in only 18 days. Initially, I used the product on a daily basis. Now, I want to really get my strength back and "go hard" every other day. This will give my muscles a chance to fully heal. I fully expect to be at a "10" in the next 6-8 weeks. I thought I was enroute to the surgeon--for sure!! I bought the the med tension, which was plenty for me. I am using this on both of my hands. My left hand is getting so strong, I don't want it to pass up my right hand. Do the exercises slow. Use 1 finger at a time for max results. Maybe I will work my way into the 'heavy' next year, but I am not in a rush....I'm not 21 years old bench pressing 300 lbs any more. I'm just trying to stay healthy and away from the knife of a surgeon. So yes, buy this product and you are trying to rehabilitate your fingers. I think the xtra light would be great for a broken/fractured finger. Good luck

They're ok, but have some quirks.
It's really nice, small form factor, works out the muscles well. Just 2 cons on this device: 1- All the springs are the same tension. That means the max tension of this device is not 4x9LBS, but 3x9LBS, as the 3 bottom springs bottom out before the 4 top ones do. It also means your pinky has a much harder time to work out than your index, or middle finger. When you buy the light version of this, is great for pinky, but lousy for index/middle/ring finger. The red (medium tension) gripper is good for the ring finger, but somewhat basic for index and middle finger, and hard for pinky. in other words, if you're like me, you'll have to buy several to train a hand. 2- The bottom springs are pretty useless. They actually tilt the device when training individual fingers. The company also sells a mid, and a basic version of this device (this is the Pro device). The mid device and the pro device both have the same issue. When the device tilts, it tends to slip out of the hand. The basic version does not have this bottom spring set; and feels more stable in the hand, but doesn't have the higher resistance tension... 3- The bottom rubber doesn't feel very stable in the hand. It's very narrow, and sometimes tends to slide in the hand (esp when sweaty). The top has 4 buttons covered with rubber. It feels nicer than the mid-quality brothers for the medium tension (9LBS) or up. If you want to go for light, consider the basic, or mid-quality grippers, as they are a few $ cheaper, and quality wise make very little difference. Aside from these quirks, these grippers are very good. I bought 3 sets, but for a regular male, I would recommend starting out with the red version (medium strength). If you do regular workouts, are athletic built, consider skipping the regular, and head for heavy, or x heavy!

This is an amazing product, I started out using the light version ...
This is an amazing product, I started out using the light version a few years ago, and now I have upgraded my way to the heavy version. This is about 10X better than the non-pro version of the gripmaster, it fits the palm better, has more even resistance, and most importantly, isnt squeaky and annoying. I started using these to build up my grip strength for weightlifting since most weights I was lifting fatigued my forearms and fingers faster than the muscle I would be training. Now, I don't have that issue anymore, in fact, my forearms and hands are probably the most developed and rock solid muscles I have on my body. This thing seriously works, and fast. There are also some programs you can look up on the internet to find different ways to train individual muscles in your forearms and hands. This works great before workouts to get your hands ready for stabilizing heavy weight, and I even use it like a stress ball sometimes. I usually throw it in my pocket and use it on long drives or bored in the waiting room or something like that. Hands down probably one of my favorite amazon purchases, amazing price and quality for how much use it gets. don't second guess yourself, just buy one already.

Can you believe this thing lower blood pressure?
Friend of mine at the GYM game me a Harvard Medical School article that mentioned lowering blood pressure by exercising to about 1/3rd of max grip. I know this is only 7lbs per but if you can lift 100lbs with one arm, which is like 21 lbs per 5 fingers, this grip machine is just right for you at 7 pounds per finger or 35lbs (counting 4 fingers and a thumb). The basis of the Harvard Medical School study was a Physician who was assisting the Air Force in developing methods to combat blackout during high G maneuvers on modern day jets like the F15/16 at nearly 10Gs and he found that if the subject was to prevent blood from "pooling" in the lower extremities with abouit 1/3 of max effort on the joy stick, he/she could stave off blackout with the side effect of lowering blood pressure,. So while watching TV or relaxing, squeeze this guy for a couple of minutes, resting and repeating, you can lower your blood pressure (I'm pre-hypetensive). I'd cut and paste a link if I could but AMAZON just deletes it so I won't bother. You can do the search and find that the physician that found the correlation but he wants $400. You can pick one up from here(no frills version) for about 10 bucks....

Great little piece of hardware!
I ordered the Gripmaster Pro to improve my fretting hand strength. I'm double-jointed on the last joint of my ring finger, and really wanted something to improve my finger stability and individual articulation on the ring and pinky fingers. I had purchased the Planet Waves Varigrip earlier, and thought it was ok. But as soon as I opened and started using the Gripmaster Pro I immediately saw and felt a difference. The build quality and materials are noticeably better. They built it better than it had to be, which is always a good sign. Don't mess around with any of the other grip strengtheners... this is the one you want! Make sure to get the Pro version, and plan on stepping up to the heavier tensions before long. The difference in my finger strength and dexterity is noticeable. I have no qualms about recommending this item. I'll be stepping up to the next tension level within the week.

Best there is.
When it comes to hand grippers, these guys make the best ones there are. The ability to work each finger individually (check their website) is great. Regular hand grips are one dimensional and leave alot to be desired if you are trying to strengthen your hands. This really lets you get the whole hand where it "needs" to be. On top of that, it's well built and feels good in the hand. I have a medium tension one that has been great. I've been thinking about getting a heavy tension one. Not to replace the medium tension, but to supplement it. Both would absolutely be right for different things.

It's cool that it does each finger individual
It's cool that it does each finger individual, really makes sure that you don't just compensate with some fingers and leave some weak. But...in the end, the way it's done the range of motion seems a lot smaller than other hand exercisers I've used. In the end I think I rather would have just gotten a traditional one because of that. 3 stars because it does seem well built and the individual finger thing is cool. But no more than that because the range of motion is just small.

Excellent produit
