Clearance Clarence

Bought these for my mountain bike. But somehow they ended up on my Trek hybrid project. The original layout of my Trek 7500FX left allot to be desired as far as comfortable hand positioning options(see pick). And left me in pain after riding minutes. So I decided to give these a shot on the Trek. Mounting for me was a bit of a pain. Having to position everything just right. So the brakes, and the room sucking Deore shifters could all work and play nice together(see pic). The brake lever caused me to have to mount these hanging out about a half inch(pic). I also had to take into account room for the Sram bar tape that I was adding as well. Getting the clearance of the brake lever tip to the Drop8 bars to within 1/8 of an inch(see pic). Finally I finished these off with the Sram tape. After Having watched several VERY informative videos from a company we'll call "Ark Tool". I now knew the tape wrapping direction mattered a LOT. The way we naturally hold the bars requires the wrap be directional. On the drops the wrap needs to be clock wise on the right side changing to counter clock wise on the straight bar as you move up. The left side would be the opposite of this. Not having realized the tape kit came with masking bits, I had left the corners open. Which now I think I'll leave it. So If I have to I can make minor adjustments to the bars, I can. My labor time came in at just under an hour. This was my first tape job. But I am a competent bike/anything mechanic. My advice would be do a little video research, and give yourself plenty of time to make mistakes. As I put miles on this set up I'll check back to update this if needed. If you made it this far "Thanks for reading!". I was not Paid in ANY way shape, or form for this review.

Updated review - 3 years and counting. Love these ends

I've had these drop ends for over 3 years now and have installed them on at least 3 different bikes and a number of different handlebars. Currently, they are on my hybrid with a set of mountain bike ends and Ergon grips. With this setup, I have 4 different hand placements which is great for long rides - I gain the drop position without losing a more upright position when I'm in traffic.I'm a big guy with wide shoulders so I have the ends outside my grips. If you're not as wide as I am, try what others have recommended and put the drops inside the grips.I've used bar tape before; this install, I used foam grips. The foam feels great; however, I will eventually have to add some tape anyway to cover the tops of the drops. Some other notes - Obviously, the ends are sturdy enough to be switched several times. I did replace one of the bolts this last time because I stripped out the head. Other than that. no issues. The best bars for these ends are risers and flat bars. I did get them installed past the first cure on a butterfly bar (stretched them with a screwdriver, used lots of lube, and then squeezed them back together with pliers); if you're willing to put in the work and scratch u your butterfly bar, they will add another position.I did try installing these on 2 different sets of swept-back bars and on cruiser bars. The angle for hand placement just didn't work but might be OK on a set of bars with less sweep.Highly recommended.

Work just fine, but not for everyone!

Returned: I have large hands and found these drop-down attachments to be uncomfortable due to the indentation in the bars.

Excellent drop bar ends!

I love these things! Since I only have a mountain bike, these things make me feel like I have a mountain bike; AND road bike, without the price OR need of extra room! Since I could'nt find anything like them at my local bike shop, I decided to check Amazon, (since they seem to have everything under the sun) and the search returned these! When I got them (after installing them), I rode my bike down to the local bike shop and showed them to the owner. He told me that he had never seen anything like them before! He even showed them to an employee. He has since started looking on Amazon, himself! I get strange looks with them,(admit it, how many mountain bikes do you see with drop bars??) but i'm going to try to add brake levers, so I have brakes going down hills (which can be VERY steep where I live) I'll update my photos AND review when I get that taken care of. I ordered some brake levers for them, BRAKE LEVER ROAD ACTION ALLOY W/EXTENSION and i'm hoping they'll work for me. We'll see! Also, I already have, and will CONTINUE to recommend these to anyone with a mountain bike!UPDATE (12-19-2012): I got the BRAKE LEVER ROAD ACTION ALLOY W/EXTENSION but sadly, was unable to use them. I instead took my bike to my Local Bike Shop, and had them see if they could do anything. Turns out he was able to, (as seen in the pics I put up) as well as cover them with red cork bar tape! That gives them better grip, as they seem to be a tad slippery, otherwise. I still think they're awsome; just more so now!

great idea. small on application

I bought these bars for my Giant Cypress DX hybrid bike. Even though I only gave them three stars, it wasnt because they didnt work. Its just that they could work so much better. They are very very small compared to what I thought they would be but the problem is, most all hybrid bikes have handlebars with a slight pull back to them which in turn tilts the bar ends to an inward position. This is very uncomfortable for my hands. I wish they would have compensated for this and made them with an outward angle of about 15 to 20 degrees. This would have kept them at a straight pull back angle. As it is right now, you have to rest your upper body weight on the very small tunnel between your palm just outside the muscle to the thumb. This means that comfort is very short lived.TO SUMMARIZE: they do allow for a different place to put your hands but they do not extend the comfort of a long ride do to the odd angle that anything other than a straight flat bar will put them in.

Love em’

Installed these on a flat bar hybrid instead of changing the bar. They feel just like a drop bar, and no changing the breaks or shifters. And the price was great.
