Dark clouds gather over a noble mill heiress in 1880s northern England. From the Catherine Cookson novel.

Realistic
As humans, we all like happy ending. This movie is not about happy ending, it is about a real life. Throughout the human history, how many times a good, honest, and innocent person suffered because of the crimes of rich and influential? That is what happened in this movie as well. At least, the villain got what he deserved. That was a comfort.

Good
It has been a while since I've seen Catherine Cookson adaptations on tv. I really enjoyed them the first time I saw them years ago. They are always a very stark look at life in late 19th century or early 20th century England. This is one of the darker stories. None of Cookson's stories have what could be considered "happy" endings. They often have satisfying endings that are a relief after all of the hard scrabble during the story. But this one is more ambiguous. The story is well told and the acting is pretty good. It does seem a little disjointed at times because the story takes leaps in time that could be confusing if you're not paying attention.

GREAT MOVIE
This was a great movie but I wish Joe could've been saved from the wrongful hanging. I could see the disappointment in the Mrs eyes when Joe told her he was getting married. I think she was hoping to marry him herself.

The ever prolific Catherine Cooksen
When I want to retreat from the hustle and bustle of life's little dailies, I go to Catherine Cooksen. The Black Candle is a good one for escape watching. If you want fluff and happy times, don't become a Catherine Cooksen fan, but if you love to see what happens when things just don't go right and tangled webs are woven by lies and deceit -- you will love her work in books and DVD's.

Basically Grim
Much violence...brutal killing, wife beating, fighting, death-sentence of an innocent man, reprehensible behavior by one of the main characters. Not a pleasurable viewing experience, and not one of Cookson's best books. Sorry I spent the time to watch this one.

Great...but no subtitles
Buyer beware: Catherine Cookson releases on this label, (Granada-Cinema Club) have no subtitles. if your hearing impaired like my parents are, please avoid this release. Even the 'Daily Mail promo' releases have subtitles. Them, and the 'Catherine Cookson Collection' are a better option
