A great place to start
Read and Speak Arabic for Beginners (Book + Audio CD) (Read and Speak Languages for Beginners) I'm trying to get myself kick-started with Arabic and having real trouble... the script's such a problem. This book's helping me start to recognise the letters and learn some words and phrases, without bothering about writing. It's very basic level and good fun with exercises that really help you test what you've picked up. The most accessible book for an absolute beginner I've found.

Learning Arabic can be fun!
At face value this book may seem to be a little childish and aimed at the younger learner but once you start to use the book it is great fun "even for adults". I am studying Arabic at Leeds University at the beginners' level and we use this book in class to break up the tedious learning process involved in learning a new language by injecting a little fun and games into it. So take off your academic hat and have a laugh as you learn.

Best Beginner's Book for Arabic
I have purchased many books to learn Arabic and this one is the best. Although it is more like a high school workbook it is fun and it works! It has english, written arabic, and phonetic arabic - all three are rarely in other books. The games are fun and instill the language further. I highly recommend this book and cannot wait to purchase the next level. Also, the Arabic writing is large enough so that it can be read easily, unlike many other books.

A good book for the beginner
Now, I am speaking from the point-of-view of a person who has a native command of the Arabic language and tutors people in Arabic. I would strongly recommend you find someone to tutor you if you want to learn the language rather quickly and hopefully from someone who is good at both English and Arabic. At least someone who will get you through deciphering the alphabet. The book that says the 100 words in Arabic by the same authors would be a necessary companion to this book. If you don't get it, at least you will need a good book that explains the alphabet and if you do not pull something off the net and you will fine. This book is written rather well, has good pictures, captivates the interest of the reader, has a CD. I just would have liked if they had the alphabet in the beginning, but at least they have it in the back of the book if you look. So I would recommend this book if you want a quick introduction to useful Arabic for a Westerner going to an Arabic country and needing how to ask for directions, order food, ask about someone's family...

It is a useful book to have for your collection of Arabic textbooks when you are a long-time self-paced student of Arabic language as I am.
