Cute and yucky at the same time
McCloskey does it again! After making pigeons, worms, and goldfish seem warm and comfortable to beginning readers (recommended for 4 to 8-year-olds), here he does the same for snails and slugs. Can something be cute and yucky at the same time? McCloskey presents lots of little-known facts about snails and their mucus.True fact: when I was a child, I once held a snail in my hand for so long that it tried to eat its way through my hand. It ate so slowly that it never broke my skin. Snails aren’t smart enough to make pets, but they sure are interesting to study. This book will tell children what to look for.

Lots of fun & lots of facts!
SNAILS ARE JUST MY SPEED! is the perfect blend of non-fiction and fun! Not only does the author really understand a child's sense of humor, but he continually finds ways to make the facts come to life in the text and his art. I love the parade of snails that illustrate how snails use mucus trails to find their way and he's included a great cross-section of a snail. I work in a preschool and summer camp and plan to use this book in my storytimes!

Five year old LOVES this book
My daughter asks to read this book almost every night. It's hilarious and just a little gross and you learn all kind of cool things, like love darts. I just had to see them for myself, so I did a You Tube search for "snail love darts" and then sat there with my five-year old watching a video of two snails doin' it. Mother of the year, right here!

3 month old Isla is captivated by all the illustrations and fun facts about snails! This great books takes readers on an journey that includes everything snail: habitats, sizes, the food chain (what they eat and who eats them), and a plethora of Snail facts! Some ... that have even contributed to modern day folk tails. For example ... did you know the story of Cupid’s arrows may have come from snails love darts? Fun and engaging way to teach your little ones about these peculiar creatures!
I love how this book succeeds in teaching factual information while providing entertainment—for both my child and myself! My daughter is 16 months and already enjoys looking at the beautiful illustrations and engaging with the information on each page. This book comes highly recommended by me (and my 16 month old)!

Three Stars
Pretty straightforward easy reader about snails. Uses the gross-out factor for humour. All right.
