According to the manufacturer they are BPA free. I am using these barrels for emergency water storage (Amazon also sells the water preservative which preserves the water for 5 years). My barrels were delivered without serious dents, cracks or odors. I also purchased a β€œbung” wrench from Amazon to remove the 2 screw type openers on the lid. The whole lid itself of this barrel is not removable. **Q: Why are two holes drilled on the rim of the barrel? They appear to be drilled directly on the seam, thus weakening its structural integrity. Why?** A: The top rim of the barrel has weep holes that are designed for draining water of the top of the barrel, they do not weaken the integrity of the barrel. **Q: are these barrels UV resistant containers?** A: Supposedly. I keep mine inside.
