Good heavy-duty phone
This is a very good heavy-duty phone. It's got bulk and feels tough just when you're holding it. I have a Samsung Note 8 and for the last three months, I've been popping my sim in the RugGear when I'm out and about (about 4 days a week on jobs). It hasn't fallen or gone for a swim yet but I'm confident that it would survive if these things happened - which is more than I can say for my Samsung (my Samsung Note needed the screen and some internal mechanism replaced after it fell two feet off the bed and onto thick plush carpet). It feels a bit clunky but does everything you'd expect from a modern phone. The screen quality is good and the camera is good too for on the job photos.I think the price tag represents good value for what you get. I have to treat my Samsung with kid gloves but this RugGear acts the way I need my phone to act - suffer through my day and bounce back from the knocks the same way I have to :-)I was pleased to be able to purchase a wallet case for this phone separately.

Let Down Only By The Display - 5.99-inch HD / 720 x 1440
Yes, the screen is only 720 x 1440 which is half the pixel density of my old phone (720 x 1440 is what one would expect on a very budget phone and only allows limited detail content on the display).Standard Google Widgets for example can take up over half the screen as I guess are designed for higher pixel density displays (The display is 269 Pixels Per Inch). If all the apps you are going to use are very basic (like the display), this may not be an option and the plus points may win out.Good Points1. Not a single third party app installed, just basic Google ones (not even a weather app).2. 20Gb of free storage out of the 32Gb installed.3. Hopefully it can survive a dunking in the water (I have not tried this. Also note the headphones socket has a cover over it).4. Good fit in the hand and feels tough.5. Front and rear camera quality seems acceptable.6. Takes up to a 128Gb Micro SD card (I have put a Sandisk Pro 128Gb in it). What is missing1. No NFC Support2. No Fingerprint or camera option to unlock3. Last security update 5th May 2018 - Will it get any updates?Battery also seems built in so not sure if a replacement would be obtainable.Setting up was pretty easy once I figured out how to get the SIM card tray out. It has a waterproof cover over it and this has to be levered out exposing the eject button for the tray. Hopefully my photos are clearer than the ones in the manual. It has a USB-C connection and the charger is only two pin and have not tried it (or the headphones). So yes it all works but I don't think it rates the price (at review time £339.00).Also, I guess because it is a little obscure, no cases exist for it.I shall try and keep using it but very tempted to go back to my Sony Xperia XA2 32 GB Android O UK SIM-Free Smartphone which of course features fingerprint unlock, NFC and 424PPI display.

Decent middle-of-the-road Android phone with a solid build
This is the first RugGear item I’ve ever tried and I’m pretty impressed.Functionally and in terms of spec, it is a fairly vanilla, standard Android phone. Specs like the processor, the memory (32GB) and the battery capacity are all decidedly average, neither great nor terrible. The implementation of Android 8.1 is a very straightforward, un-treated installation that doesn’t either benefit or suffer from any of the tweaks that manufacturers like Samsung will do to it. Setting it up is very easy, even if you don’t already have a Google account and you’re not transferring any profile, and within a couple of minutes you’re on the home screen and can start installing your apps and setting up your contacts etc. It’s not particularly fast at times, but for everyday functions like email and actually calling people, it’s got the power you’d need. One notably above-average element, in my opinion, is the screen quality. As well as being really rather large, it’s got a vibrancy and detail in it that is really rather good. The touchscreen is perfectly responsive as well.So while software-wise it’s average, the point of it is that it’s a stronger piece of kit than your average smartphone, which it definitely is. It’s quite chunky, not striving for the thin profile or edgeless design that other phones seem to be striving for. The extra bulk is plastic, rather than metal, so it doesn’t feel quite as industrial as it might, but it’s clearly going to withstand some drops onto hard floors that other phones with more exposed glass might not. It claims to be waterproof, which is believable, although one thing I haven’t been brave enough to test is how the USB-C and 3.5mm jack sockets would cope with a bit of water. Water did for the 3.5mm jack on one of my old phones and I don’t know how this device’s jack would fare any better, and I may just have to take the manufacturer’s word for it.It’s USB-C for charging, rather than microUSB, which should make it a few years more futureproof as well. Despite living in the UK, the box I received only contained a European-style 2-plug wall adapter for the USB cable, but thankfully I have plenty of USB wall plug devices- the one from your previous phone will probably do it- so that wasn’t much of a problem, but for anyone being bought this as a “my first phone” it could’ve been an issue. At first I didn’t realise this phone has a microSD card slot- I couldn’t see one and I assumed that they’d done away with it to help make it more rugged- and I was going to criticise it for being a bit limited at only 32Gb. However it *does* have a microSD slot- albeit one that’s really very fiddly indeed to access, tucked in behind the SIM card- which allows you to boost the storage by however much you want, which is very handy if (like me) you like playing downloaded music on your phone without depending on a data signal, or you shoot a lot of videos, or you just end up installing a lot of large apps you’re never really going to use.The call quality is perfectly decent- with a good phone reception (which seems standard compared to other phones) you can clearly hear the other person and they can hear you, so all fine there. However the internal speaker, for if you want to use your phone as a music player (preferably when at home, not on public transport thank-you-very-much), is pretty underwhelming. Despite the fact it’s a weighter phone and should therefore be capable of a beefier sound, it’s a very bass-light sound, fine for pop or spoken-word stuff but very lacking if you’re intending to listen to any dubstep or bassfunk. Of course it has Bluetooth though so you can sort that out using a Bluetooth speaker if necessary. The camera is also a touch on the disappointing side. Just because it’s 12 megapixels doesn’t mean it’s good quality, unfortunately, and it’s certainly not bad, but it doesn’t have the “wow” factor that some current phones really do when it comes to what’s possible with their cameras now. In low light you get some very grainy images and the options for controlling your snaps are quite limited. Fine for the odd selfie or two, but if you’re thinking that this rugged phone will get to the top of the mountain and then take brilliant panoramic photos once you get to the top, the picture quality may disappoint you a little. In terms of daily use, this is a very average smartphone, for people who want to do the basic common stuff that smartphones are for without needing the top-of-the-range features or processor power that you’d want for gaming, VR etc. But if you’re somebody who’s prone to dropping their phone in the loo, or sticking it in your back pocket then accidentally sitting on it, then this is a phone that you can be trusted with!

RG850 - Alles top !
