The version on the CD brings to live a duet between two dysfunctional lovers...Really this single is about the single REPTILIA but it is really placed in the shadow by the second track, in my view...MODERN GIRLS & OLD FASHION MEN features Regina Spektor...The song is sounds like an argument between Julian and Regina...Both lashing at each other about what they see wrong in their relationship...But really about a mistress and and old fashioned man...LISTEN TO IT... and if you like this I implore you listen to Murder Mysteries by Velvet Underground...I find a similarity between both... Good day...

I woke up with this as an earworm, then wondered why I hadn't gotten hold of it when it was first released! Class.

Great A-side, but words do not describe how good this B-side is. I've never heard a duet quite like it. Rather than sing in unison, the two are singing different vocals at the same time, giving the song a real sense of the disharmony that exists between men and women. Regina Spektor's stunning voice compliments the whole Strokes sound perfectly, and to Casablancas' credit, he doesn't get blown away by her powerful singing. If anything, his laid back vocals are a perfect foil for her emotional articulation, giving the song the perfect juxtaposition of the high-maintenance female and relaxed male. Essential

The brilliant A-side will be familiar to all who have purchased the excellent 'Room On Fire' LP, however, the real selling point of this single is the Strokes' unusual choice of a new song as its B-side - "Modern Girls and Old Fashion Men". This represents a real departure for the band; Regina Spektor's vocals make this interesting duet, almost akin to rock-opera in its structure. I genuinely love this song, and with the albums 'Is This It' and 'Room On Fire' (plus the song 'When It Started') adds to the Strokes now burgeoning song catalogue.

Reptilia's great, but Modern Girls and Old-Fashioned Men is the real reason to buy this single. Just another great example of how the Strokes can make a simple two-chord ditty build to an orgasm. You'll be pleasantly surprised with what what happens when Julian Casablancas doesn't get to hog the mike. Both singers sound great. Even the title is on point...girls these days...(sigh). Sing it, Jules.

This is the second single to be released from "Room On Fire", and is one of the most catchy songs form that alubm. It has a truly infectious guitar line (so simple, but so well executed that it will drill itself into your consciousness) and a fantastic rythym, not to mention Julian's rasping vocals, which are reminiscent of New York City Cops.
