The bristles aren't flexible, but the flex of the individual rows of the brush seems to do the trick. Whenever I get my hair done in a salon, I will plan to take this brush for the stylist to use. My only complaint (thus 4 stars) is the handle. It's not terribly uncomfortable and it's probably the most efficient of any detangling brush handle that I've used, but it's not perfect, though I don't know what the perfect brush handle is or feels like.
