Traditional hojicha, rich tasting yet low in caffeine
The street to the temple in Uji is lined with traditional tea shops. Some have been there hundreds of years, serving emperors. Uji is the main source of the best tea in Japan. I never buy Japanese green tea that isn’t from Uji.This Hojicha has the rich flavor of a properly roasted tea. But there are some elaborate instructions on the package on how to prepare it, which I suggest you ignore. Unlike highly refined Japanese teas, hojicha is a rugged tea that doesn’t need babying. You don’t have to worry about water temperature. Just add boiling water to the leaves and twigs in the pot. Don’t juggle the pot around; this could cause bitterness. And don’t leave any tea in the post after filling your cup or cups. Then your pot can give you two or three more full-bodied infusions.I love the simplicity of brewing hojicha. And I can drink it in the evening (in moderation) and still sleep soundly. This is definitely a superior Hojicha. Don’t be upset by the amount of twigs among the leaves. They are supposed to be there. They are as full of tea flavor as the leaves.

Surprisingly refreshing, good for the price
I bought this after having some Hojicha on a recent trip to Japan, and after hunting around a bit on Amazon I settled on this brand. Admittedly I did not have very high expectations mostly because I did not know how to choose. This Hojicha is pleasant - has nice caramel tones and is light, sweet and refreshing. I made it with water that was not boiling hot (the instructions say to leave it to rest till about 140F - at the office I just mix some of the hot water with cold water until it was hot enough but still drinkable) and it was not astringent at all. Very smooth mouthfeel. This is a great everyday tea.

It is a very high quality and the price is a bargain
The flavor of this tea is excellent, I have tried this type of tea a long time ago and forgot how great the flavor was,It brews very well with the recommended lower than standard green tea temperature. I make mine in a stainless steel tea kettle with a precise thermostat and use triple filtered water. A great flavor combination is to make a cup of Hojicha tea then drink a cup of Gennmaitcha shortly after, It really makes the distinct flavors of each tea stand out.I was even thinking of adding a tea spoon of some dark roast coffee to a kettle of Hoijicha tea as an experiment to see how the flavor reacts. Maybe even some expresso.I highly recommend this excellent tea.

Delicious Hojicha tea - the real deal!
If you're a fan of the deeper flavors of a roasted green tea, look no further than this hojicha tea. I've tried other mainstream brands of hojicha and found them lacking in flavor compared to the ones I've tasted in my favorite Japanese restaurants. Finally I came across this Zen no Ocha Hojicha tea, and am very happy with it. It's the same deep flavor and taste quality that you'll find in those high end Japanese restaurants that make you buy hot tea separately. Highly recommended!

Hojicha tea - Stems galore but good flavor
A heaping tablespoon (about 3 oz) of this tea in 16 ounces of 175 (F) degree water steeped for 10 minutes yields a full flavored tea with good body and a dark brown color. Surprisingly this came from a tea that is mostly stems and broken pieces and very little whole leaf. If you look carefully this is what is shown in the Amazon image. I have not tried the package's instructions that suggest steeping 6 oz of tea in 24 oz of 140 (F) degree water for 1 to 2 minutes, but it seems given the predominance of stems that this would be a very weak tea.If you are looking for green tea LEAF go elsewhere. If you are looking for good taste this may be the tea for you.

Tastes awful
I was looking for a more affordable loose leaf version of Mighty Leaf Hojicha tea. This ain't it. It's flavorless, even when made strong. Maybe I don't know my Japanese teas well enough, and maybe this is fine for some people. It's not fine for me. I'm just going to go out and buy a new box of Mighty Leaf and throw this out.

The aroma is amazing
The tea has an amazing aroma compared to just plain green tea. The roasted green tea has a very good taste. You do need a diffuser, since the tea doesn't tend to sink to the bottom of the cup, meaning the leaves and twigs stay floating on the top. Many have complained that there's a lot of twigs instead of leaves but that didn't hinder the flavor. Its a good tea

Exactly what I wanted
This is amazing. Hojicha isn't something that can be found on the shelves in the west. For people complaining, I think one should know what hojicha is before ordering. It's not green tea, it's roasted tea. It's one of my favorite after-dinner / evening teas.
