Updated- Sturdy little tree, great company
Please note that this review is for a tree that was sold by Clifton's Nursery. Any mention of the supplier is only in regard to Clifton's. I don't know how this ended up on a different nursery's item page. Clifton's does not seem to have these trees any longer. Additionally, after about four years, the tree passed during a short (less than thirty miles) move. I moved it myself, handled it gently and, made sure that it was well isolated from the wind and road vibrations. Not sure what happened there and it is a shame, I liked the tree and the foliage though I never really got many lemons from the plant (possibly a result of my location in the northeast and having to keep it indoors for so long each year.)I received the tree about two months ago. Out of the box there were a couple of leaves that didn't survive the packing. In my original review I mentioned this problem and immediately received a message from John Dhanens, the owner and nursery manager of Clifton Farms offering his help to make sure that the tree pulls through and recovers from the trip. After a few weeks of settling in the tree is doing much better now and John sent along another message just to check on the tree and to make sure I was happy with the purchase.I have to say, in this day, this type of customer service and follow up is very rare indeed. I will be sure to tell everyone I know about John and his desire to make things right. In his own words; "Being a little guy, my philosophy is to be in it for the long haul, building long term relationships with customers... Glad to hear the tree is doing better..." Clifton Nursery and John has a new supporter in me. I am very pleased with the whole purchase and follow through.

Nothing like the photo - scrawny and broken
Just received. Scrawny "tree" with one main twig - broken 3/4 the way up - and one small shoot coming off that. Very disappointing. If I live long enough - and if this scrawny tree does - I may see a lemon someday.

Hopeful then Disappointed
I bought two of the 1-gallon meyer lemon trees in December of 2010 for Christmas. The plants came packaged well which gave me hope. The plant did suffer from some shock, but after following the directions given to me it seemed to spring back. After about 3 weeks of having the tree it suddenly took a turn for the worse and has since died. I followed the directions but the tree never sprouted the entire time I owned it. The second tree that I bought as a gift came with a lemon already growing but not ripe. That tree faired even worse and the lemon never ripened and that tree also died. Perhaps I should have waited to buy the trees in a warmer season, OR, perhaps I should just learn my lesson and not buy trees through the internet.

Hit or Miss (Can Easily Be Damaged During Shipment)
We lucked out with our tree. It survived the shipment process but even then it was pretty "scrawny looking" and took a long time for it to "wake up and sprout leaves", even though we gave it a sunny window and a big new potting and water at the correct intervals. This is one of those things where it's not the fault of the retailer... you're just taking chances because you can't pick it out for a start the way you do at a nursery, and then you're putting it in a box and tossing it on an airplane, it's getting bounced around, etc. Expect that you'll have a 50/50 chance of getting it right. But if you do, you'll enjoy the tree. My advice: don't buy it during cold weather months where it might get several hours "cold exposure" on your porch, or in a delivery truck. Ours still hasn't produced fruit yet but we're looking forward to when it does. Or more specifically my wife is (for her cooking).UPDATE: My recommendation is to plan ahead when potting this tree. Use a substantially larger pot than is necessary (deeper / wider) at first, so that it can grow outward and upward (roots and up top) for the first couple years. My wife planted this in a pot that is maybe 12" in diameter and maybe 15-16" deep and within a year roughly the tree stopped growing upward and the branches are growing straight out now (much wider than it is tall), and the fruits that come in are very small and don't grow much. I'm not an expert but I believe threes stop growing upward when their roots run out of room. Now she's read something says if you try to transplant when the tree is flowering, you'll "stunt it"... so we're going to end up waiting another year basically to get usable fruit.UPDATE 2: I contacted the actual grower / original seller and they were very helpful in providing advice via email. The good news is, if your tree is not growing upward and the trunk isn't getting thicker, it handles pruning very well. Also if you can get it outdoors during the summer sun, that will help a lot (it will grow much faster / stronger in the sun with rain water). Best idea is for the first couple years, cut off any fruits early (the nutrients go to the fruits but they do not grow large enough to use in the early years / they don't ripen). Also keep pruning the tree periodically so that you encourage the branches that are going in the "right direction" to grow (i.e. leave them alone) and you stunt any leggy growth before it gets too long. If you can get this thing intact from the shipment, and you have a big enough pot and a good spot for it, you should be OK.

Cute plant, fragrant flowers - replanted well!
Its not ready to bear fruit yet, and its not the season, so I'll update when its the right season -- but I replanted it in a 5-gallon container and it is very happy. Its bloomed a few times (very fragrant flowers), but the weather in Southern CA has been too insane, so I don't blame her if she doesn't want to bear fruit just yet.. I'm giving her some time, but so far, she's got new growth and did well after replanting (I used 1/2 coco coir and 1/2 compost soil with charcoal sprinkled in).

Super Tree
I received this little tree as a Christmas gift. It was in its box for a few days before I was told to open it due to the gift giver being ill at the time. It was delivered to my home in Colorado during the cold winter. Honestly I was surprised it looked green and healthy when I opened the box . I did not have high hopes for its well-being. I transplanted it to a large container and placed it in my warm and sunny sunroom. I water once weekly. This lovely plant has produced at least 30 blossoms. I am thrilled. I will assist self-pollinating each one in order to create lemons. The blossoms smell amazing! I could not be happier!
