I love spy stories
I find that I frequently get stuck in an author rut, buying novel after novel by the same author. When I realize this is happening I try to find something from an author I haven't read before. This is how I found JJ Toner. I love spy stories, especially WWII spy stories. I bought the first of the 3 Black Orchestra stories and was thoroughly entertained. This led to my purchasing the others in the series. The main character is named Kurt Miller. He's a rather ordinary kind of guy who finds himself working as a code reader/breaker in the Germany military machine. His access to information, in his job as well as through informal channels causes him to seriously question what Hitler and the Nazi's were doing? His moral compass was in conflict with his Fuhrer's actions and strategies. He evolves himself, through contacts with a homegrown resistance group, into a serious thorn in the Nazi's side. His actions and behaviors become more bold over time, and the evolution is quite believable. He's a believable hero. Kind of rare in this genre.I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes stories set in WWII, and likes a good thriller involving spying, bad guys, and a believable underdog.Rick P.

Well Done!
I am a big fan of the WWII era having read countless non-fiction accounts of various battles and key figures. I felt the author did a great job of putting me right in that scene, tracing the activities of two spies during a very tense time of history. I liked that he did not spend a lot of time wasting words just to prove that he knew them. His writing was very direct and the story flowed well. I recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn more about that time period while also being pulled into an engaging story.

Exceptional.
This was my third experience with Kurt, Erica and the world of JJ Toner. I was mesmerized with the plot, the rescue within a rescue and the ability (as stated earlier) to write a treatment as a fully functional novel. I kept story-boarding shots for the film. Mr. Toner, to preclude a spoiler warning, I plan on writing you directly as to my favorite snippet from the book. To my fellow Amazon readers, enjoy the entire series...yes, I have bought the next one!

Fishing for Truth
In this fast paced final part to the Black Orchestra series, Kurt Muller races to save his fiancé from the Germans. Leaving without permission or leave causes him problems, but his heart leads him on. While seeking a way into Germany he finds himself helping others while threading his way through many scrapes to save his beloved Gudrun. Another good read by JJ Toner you won't want to miss!

A Good Read but a Pretty Implausible Plot
This a well written, fast paced narrative of a German born man who ends up working for British intelligence as he dislikes the Nazi regime which has taken over his country. The plot however I found a little far fetched. He takes it upon himself to leave wartime England (goes AWOL) and "travels" to Nazi Germany to look for his girlfriend, breaking into Gestapo headquarters along the way, then travelling back to war-torn England again. Apart from this easier said than done plot, it is absorbing and entertaining.

Fast Paced Black Orchestea
I have read the first two books of the series. If you read them, you will like this entry. That said, I found it a little lacking and predictable. Again, if you like the series, you will like this book.....but the author needs to nee the just a bit more plausibility into the next entry......

After the previous books in the series this is somewhat ...
After the previous books in the series this is somewhat disappointing. Some situations are quite impossible not surviving a critical reading, e.g. the german farmer wanting to force a Gestapo listed person to be son in law! Anyhow, cost-benefit ok for filling the time during a long bus trip!

One star is an act of kindness!
This novel made the Biggles stories I read avidly as a ten-year old boy seem sophisticated. The prose is puerile, the plot thin and unbelievable but predictable, reminiscent of nineteen-fifties serials at the 'flicks', hero in a seemingly impossible situation miraculously rescued in the nick of time. Finally, the book's inhabitants are cardboard cut-outs. A deadset dud!

Patchy
Not far into this book yet, but historical background seems to me a little sketchy. British Railways did not exist in 1942, it did not come into being until 1948. He should have referred to the Southern Railway going to the Kent Coast. It's a light read, short chapters so ideal for bed time reading, & so far quite a good story, but I would like to know how Gudrun's abduction from Ireland being brought through the UK & ending up in Nazi Germany took place.

Series has deteriorated
This series started off quite well with The Black Orchestra, but has deteriorated quite badly. The second installment saw Kurt Muller almost defeating Germany on his own, and this third installment is equally unrealistic and unbelievable. If you really like this genre, read Philip Kerr (Bernie Gunther books) or Luke McCallin (Gregor Reinhardt books).

Disappointing
I gave up after a few chapters as the story was preposterous. Writing about relatively recent history needs proper research and knowledge of the times. By the way Bromley is already in Kent and getting a fisherman to smuggle you over the channel in WW2 is stretching credibility and for me the final straw.

Factually Incorrect.
The plot was 'OK' but ignoring some of the graphic content, this book could have been written for a 5 year old. It was all too convenient and I have to say weird in parts.I did not find any suspense at all in this story, the writer seemed to find too simple solutions for the challenges faced by the protagonists

A lot of promise unfulfilled
After a promising start this book seemed to lose a coherent story line and became laughable with it,s inclusion of klaus Barbie. And why the detailed sexual descriptions ?

War
A good story but too many lucky breaks. Could someone have really survived all that went wrong with this operation.

I really enjoyed reading the novel
Yes, I really enjoyed reading the novel. It was reasonably paced, with many surprises and even though the ending was predictable in a general sense, I had to keep reading to see the detailed ending.I will certainly read more books by the same author.Rob...

abaixo das expectativas
dos livros que li, esse é o mais fraco. Uma trama rocambolesca, argumentos fracos fazem com que eu tenha essa avaliação
