what are the size of each vehicle are they at least 5" tall ?

No. The items are more the size of matchbox cars.

Are these toys proper sized for use in a Lionel O gauge train set?

I don't believe so. Also - the hitches were not deep enough to keep the toys together. they are more like cake decorations.

Do the tires come off?

Unfortunately, regrettably, some of the tires come off the rims, other tires come off the axles. I gave this to my 4 year old grandson and learned he was not ready for this type of toy. He never took tires off till he got this. It's a shame because all the pieces are made to scale and is a wonderful collection to any train platform or farm display.

What peaces are made of metal?

Various pieces are metal, some plastic. Not all plastic like some sets. I would say that they compare with the matchbox cars.
