The best of Chuck Norris
The review is for the movie, not a marketed copy or dvd. Merely the film itself. This is by far the best movie Chuck Norris EVER made. Sadly, this movie never ( or scarcely) appears on cable television. Low budget et al, still the best. How or why the best?Compare the martial arts choreography in The Octagon to any other Chuck Norris movie ever filmed ( regardless of budget) and you will see the difference. While the story line is interesting and reasonably compelling, what stands out is the choreography of martial arts. Mr. Norris employs more moves, more techniques more versatility in jumping, leaping, rolling, kicking, bare hand, w/ weapons etc. than all of his big box office hits combined ( that employ basic kicks, punches etc.) . It's a clinic.Dead roll to break the impact of a jump/fall - complete backflip to disengage a foe. It's in there. No frills though the budget may be. It's a clinic. And there is plenty of it. Not a drip here and there. Watch it in those terms of appreciation.

I Expected Better From CN and LVC
Honestly, with Chuck Norris and an aging Lee Van Cleef, in a movie about Ninjas, I was expecting some good cheesy fun in the vein of The Master. Unfortunately, what I saw instead was a disjointed mess, like someone decided to film various scenes with no script, and then edited them together to make a story. What's is the mysterious background of Chuck Norris' character? Don't know. Who is the girl with the black hair, and what bad things had she done in the past? Don't know. Who was Justine? Who was AJ? How was Lee Van Cleef's character connected? Not a clue. What, for that matter, is The Octagon? Who knows? It's never mentioned in the film. There's a vaguely octagonal area in the Ninja camp where they fight at the end, but it's not in the rest of the film and has no obvious significance. There are a few scenes of hokey ninja goodness, such as people in black hiding in leafless trees in broad daylight, but not enough to make up for the rest of this snoozefest. LVC does nothing except spout clichés and shoot one guy. Chuck spends 70 minutes refusing to get involved, literally saying no to every main quest and side quest, only to finally kick some ninja butt in a fairly uninspired fashion at the end. It's not a good film, even for Chuck.

Cheesy Chuck Norrisy Fun
This is a fun action flick, but it also has some of the absolute worst dialogue and delivery I've ever witnessed. But if you're looking for cheesy Chuck Norrisy fun, this is absolutely the movie to watch.

Action good, not so good when actual speaking takes place
This movie comes at me a few different ways: When the action is happening, its a really good movie. When 'characters' (and I use the term loosely) are speaking, they utter some of the stiffest, most painful dialogue ever committed to celluloid. The little segments with the echoing 'whisper' are the worst; what was the point of the voice effect? 1980 movies don't have high-quality sountracks anyway, and this only serves to make it barely intelligible at times. There's many characters and plot threads brought up and dropped almost at random, and the acting is mediocre at best. The only time it shines is the well-done martial arts sequences (many done with a minimum of cutting), which almost make it worth suffering through. The ending fight in particular is very nice, almost balletic in spots. A shame they couldn't have hired a screenwriter without a tin ear and possessing a sense of pace and structure.

The Octagon is a vintage Chuck Norris film with ninjas. I had seen this ages before on VHS as a kid and so this was almost a blind-buy. The plot of the film is unnecessarily meandering and talky (in the making of, the director proudly points out how they had the concept of terrorist camps before it was general knowledge in the real world) and gimmicky concepts like the echoing monologues are sometimes hard to follow (especially since there are no subtitles), but the climax of the film, where Chuck almost single-handedly takes on a small army of Ninjas in the climax is a winner - absurd, but thrilling fun.

Chuck Norris not fully formed - Mustache only!
This film is a total mess. For a while it's funny listening to Chuck's inner dialogue as he uses his Ninja Intuition and checking out the randomness of the situations but it doesn't take long to get dull. The script is sprawling and makes no sense. Nothing is really explained. Fights scenes are on the whole pretty dull. Characters have no persona or reason for being - I had no clue as to what half of the people in this film were doing in the story. There are some cool Ninja outfits though. The transfer is ok but it does have some fairly subtle edge enhancement that drags it down. If you are after some Chuck Norris I recommend something like Code of Silence over this.
