Back to a future again
“Old Man Hawkeye – An Eye For An Eye” collects the first six issues of this new series – and there’s a second volume listed on Amazon taking it to a 12-issue maxi-series.It is actually unreasonably good, bearing in mind the limitations that it has to work under. It is set ‘five years’ before the events of “Old Man Logan”, and 45 years after the event that killed most of the heroes (though there are a surprising number of them still kicking around). Our old friend Hawkeye, trading as Ronin nowadays, discovers something that finally sets him off on a quest for revenge for what happened all those years ago. He has a little list of people he doesn’t want to miss, but unfortunately he does have a little problem, but he just about manages, with the usual little bit of help from reluctant former friends, though he does have some super villains on his trail once he gets the attention of the Red Skull. The writer, who is new to me, has come up with an excellent story, and there is a superb artist maintaining the style established for the current (Secret Wars and after) Old Man Logan series, so it both looks and feels like it is sharing a world with it.This is not a cheap cash-in series – it is an excellently written and illustrated series cashing-in on the current popularity of the Old Man Logan franchise, and is doing it extremely well. Comics are a money-making project for the publishers, and if they only put this much quality into other spin-off series I’m sure we’d all be happy.
