Hardware is great. Software is awful. Can't translate for anything...
I bought a couple of translators and this was the most expensive one at $200.First the Pros:1. Small, Light and compact. Maybe 2/3 the size of the comparable $160 model from Da Xian brand. (I love the Da Xian translator, but more on that later).2. Beautiful color screen3. No annoying boot up sounds4. Looks professional5. Several extra buttons on device to aid in operation on top of a fast touch screen for the touch screen challenged6. Cool features that others don't have such as ability to save recordings. Even an option to turn this into a hotspot. SD card option, more on that below. Why this failed miserably:1. No two translators are the same. You MUST compare across brands for accuracy, using the target language that you plan to use when you travel. Every device will translate certain languages better than others. Some will fail miserably on some languages and not others. While the physical attributes of this translator topped the rest, the translation part was awful. I wish I knew more bilingual people who could test out the listed language capabilities for me, but I can at least attest to Cantonese, Mandarin, and some Spanish. Failed, failed, failed.a. This translator could not pick up correctly what I was saying in English, therefore it was translating random things back to me in the target languages.b. When the translator worked correctly and picked up what I was saying in English, it would translate things back that was way off. (ie. English: What do you want for dinner?" = Chinese: "Let's go for a midnight snack".)c. Sometimes when translating from English to Chinese, even though the translation is technically correct, colloquially, people just don't talk like that! With a dialect like Cantonese that is full of slang and colloquialism, good luck with anyone having any idea what you are talking about. It's like speaking non-formal English and getting it translated back in Shakespearean English. No one speaks like that. But to keep things simple, we used very basic language and it was still coming back all wrong.d. So bad that the menus and error notifications are not proper English. You can't navigate this thing if you don't have any idea what the menus are talking about. We were getting a weird error message and finally figured out we were holding the top button and speaking the target language rather than the native language by mistake. Would have never figured it out without trial and error on our part.e. The instruction manual, is pitiful at best. There are zero instructions on what to do with the sd card, and whatever instruction you get you probably could have figured out on your own. Would have been nice to have expanded instructions on the neat little features of this device.f. For $200 you really don't get anything in the box except the device and charger. The Da Xian came with a case, a neck lanyard, and a stylus.g. This has a smaller screen than the Da Xian, which may make it more difficult to show the opposite party the written language to read should the translation fail or cannot be heard through the speaker.h. When translating, the computer voice that speaks the target language talks incredibly fast and choppy. It doesn't sound natural, and you have to replay over and over to hear what the voice is saying. In summary, the cheaper Da Xian model outperforms this by a long shot. I will explain further in my Daxian review later. It just goes to show that more expensive is not always better. I will point out that each translator varies on accuracy with every language. I will say right now that for English to Chinese and Chinese to English this thing fails. It would be great if people could add their feedback about other languages for this device. But go with the Da Xian for more accurate English to Chinese translation.

Very good translator!
Exactly, this translator is much better than I thought. It is very thin and light, much smaller than a mobile phone, convenient to put in a pocket. The sound of the speakers can be heard clearly in the noisy streets. This is actually very easy to use and it seems to have a long battery life. Overall, I am very satisfied with this product, it is great!, Now I can’t live without it on a business trip.

does what it says
i'm not giving this a 5 star because of one reason......having to buy a sim card , other than that this thing is awesome but I didn't have to pay the 199 price got mine much cheaper.using for translation from English to Portuguese (BRL) and Visa versa only has error's when not speaking clearly

Reasonable but not infallible.
The device translates (Mandarin Chinese <=> English) reasonably well IF the speaker speaks clearly and distinctly in either language. It does not work for capturing general conversation -- one must speak directly into the device and articulate carefully. The device does not display Pinyin below only Simplified Chinese script. Traditional Chinese script is not offered -- a major defect. Nonetheless, I will test the device in an upcoming trip to Taiwan. Apropos Taiwan, the device displays the flag from Mainland (Communist) China for the "Taiwanese" dialect language option - which is officious, preposterous, and profoundly and deliberately insulting to Taiwan. If I had known of the described defects before purchasing it, I would never have bought the device.

This translator is defective and it's simply aweful
This translator is defective. Poor quality and difficult to understand. Instructions are awful. It won't even turn on. I want to return this and get a replacement. I am so disappointed it failed me while in another country where needed.
