This test prep book is very helpful in getting ready for the AP exam, but also to review things learned in class. It is a big book and contains a lot of information. It starts with information about the test and how to get ready. It then has three diagnostic exams to give the user a good idea of what to focus on for the real test. The bulk of this book has review material. Part One is The Structure of Matter, Part Two is Chemical Bonds. Parts Three and Four are States of Matter and Physical Chemistry respectively. The final part is Chemical Reactions. Each chapter within these parts has clearly written information to review and practice exercises. The end of the book contains three practice tests to complete and see if any last minute cramming is needed. There are also seven appendices with answers and explanations to practice problems and other information that might be good to know on the test. There is online content too, making it possible to study on the go with a tablet or phone. My son finds the organization of this book to be very helpful. When he learns something in class, he can find the corresponding section in this book and reinforce the information. I don't think this book could be a substitute for taking a class in high school, but it is very helpful to get ready for the AP exam and get the best possible score.

So I think some people were hoping to use this as a stand-alone resource to prep for the AP Chem exam, but that’s not really what this is for. You are supposed to take a year of AP level chem first, and then use this book to prep for the exam once you have already completely or mostly learned the material. In other words, this isn’t a textbook so much as a guide with sample tests and a few tips on how to approach problems with minimal explanations and a lot of assumed knowledge. If you understand that’s what this book and online materials are for, then you’ll not be disappointed, but if you are expecting to learn from this alone, you won’t do well.

My oldest is in high school and has used this book to prepare herself for her AP Chemistry Test, but she hasn't taken it yet. I took a lot chemistry in college back in the day, but the content of this book seems to be more intense than what I took. I know it's probably over kill for a college chemistry course, but it seems very complete in that if you want to bypass taking a semester long college chemistry course then your alternative is to study a book like this one. It has 3 online tests and 3 tests in the book. The diagrams are so well done and are very clear - totally unlike the mess my chemistry teachers scrawled on the chalkboards. I think this is a superb book, and very thick with a lot pages of quality paper.
