I am giving these five stars SOLELY because the box of 36 water-soluble oil pastels was less than ten dollars when I purchased them, which is kind of a steal. If they were more expensive, I would not be as enthusiastic about them.I bought them both out of curiosity and because I wanted a set of water-soluble oil pastels that I wouldn't feel bad about just layering endlessly, or using as mark-making on other projects in layers that would absolutely be covered up. These fit the bill- they come in a wide range of beautiful colors, there are 36 in the box, they re-wet nicely (they don't, like, melt away with the slightest touch of a brush, but I think that gives them more versatility, because sometimes you don't want all marks TO blend away) and they feel nice to use. They aren't super creamy and decadent (I really like the Mungyo for oil pastels that are water-soluble- those are almost like lipstick) but they are vivid and work well for things when you need a slightly harder application.So no, these aren't top of the line, but at the price, they are really a great value.

Unless you have to have a crayon pointed water-soluble oil pastel such as Caran d'Ache Classic Neocolor II Water-Soluble Pastels, 30 Colors, get these Royal Talens instead. They are smaller sticks but loaded with color! I'm mean REALLY loaded with color! The color choice is wonderful and they go on like butter. I don't know the lightfastness of these; maybe you have to get the Caran d'Aches for a higher rating. If that is not a concern, buy TWO of these sets because they will become your favorites. I hope that Royal Talens offers these in a full size some day. Enjoy.

Several of the colors were not readily water soluble. The colors were not very pigmented. I chose to return these as even for a beginner or kids, I felt these just weren't an acceptable product.

Good selection of colours and you can use them on their own for the oil pastel effect; with the bonus of them being water soluble for that pigmented watercolour effect. Great for art journalling.
