Hiromi Live in Concert features the pianist in a trio setting, accompanied by bassist Tony Grey and drummer Martin Valihora. Recorded at the Shinagawa Stellar Ball in Tokyo in December 2005, the DVD captures the playful yet masterful dynamics between Hiromi and her two highly talented sidemen. Throughout the ninety-minute presentation, the trio derives it's creative energy from a constant give-and-take of technical precision and raw enthusiasm. The results are sometimes passionate, sometimes playful, but always compelling.

Hiromi is incredible!!!
Great DVD, great music! Bassist and drummer are also incredible! Hiromi's music is something that not most people would like but if you are open to fusion of jazz and rock, you'll definitely like it. after watching this, I purchased all her available DVDs on Amazon. One thing I didn't like about this DVD is that there are no special/bonus features like interviews, documentations before the shows, etc. Its all plain music with track/scene selection. the DVD menu is not even animated, just a plain still background image. I'm a post production artist before, that's why I comment on these things. And because of the poor DVD authoring I'm giving it 4 stars. But all in all, I'm happy with this DVD.

Amazing musicians!!!
First, Hiromi, her bassist, and her drummer are all COMPLETELY OFF THE HOOK!!! All are masters.Second, the jazz they perform in this concert is definitely "out." If you don't like that kind of jazz, you may find this disc hard to listen to.Third, the video is not only not Blu-Ray, but it's not even 16:9!!! It was probably recorded in HD, but it was burned onto this DVD as 16:9 inside 4:3. Additionally, I would say the transfer wasn't done very well. From the first second I saw it, I thought the contrast was pretty poor. Although that's very disappointing to me, I took off only 1 star for it because the concert is so great.

Hiromi, Grey & Valihora.... smokinโ trio!
After listening to Hiromi for several years, Iโve come to the conclusion that I would rather listen to her with this rhythm section than with any other sheโs played with.... and thatโs saying something! Hiromi has taken the stage with Anthony Jackson, Steve Smith, Simon Phillips, etc.., and with this trio consisting of Tony Grey (bass) and Martin Valihora (drums), they are locked in very tight and their sound has such a raw edge to it. Nothing like what Iโve heard with Hiromiโs later releases. To be able to take highly technical music and make it groove the way these three musicians do, itโs definitely a treat to hear! Group interplay and solos just radiate from the stage! If you were fortunate enough to see this trio perform live, you saw three musicians definitely at the top of their game!

Another Amazing DVD from Hiromi
This trio can be seen as an early version of her incredible "Trio Project". I heard the latter group first, so it took a while for me to warm up to the earlier group. Jeez, sometimes you have to stop comparing and just enjoy.Anyway, this is another fantastic trio. Bassist is really also a pseudo-guitarist very influenced by Metheny and Jaco. Drummer is a frenetic (but controlled) energy machine. Hiromi, of course, is "SUPER FREAKY AMAZING WOW NICE!!!" to use some Japanese-inflected English.Kudos also for the visual team -- this is perfect, you always see what you want to see, and the camera moves just enough.

This is Awsome!
The quality is great and music is powerful. Warning, this is not for the narrow minded / casual music listener. This is a challenging video in that your brain will start going places musically that you've never been before. Very Exciting and extrememly technical, yet still progressive Jazz. Hiromi and her band are SSSSSSSSMMMMMOKIN'!! Get this thing and watch it over and over and grab what you can from it. Fantastic!

The Energizer Bunny
Hiromi is the most bright and energetic person to hit the jazz scene in the last decade. This is typical of her spark plug power.

Hiromi is Brilliant (some kind of a problem with the DVD though...)
To be brief, I have some previous of Hiromi's DVD's and just added this to my collection. There a very poor quality Youtube videos, so why spoil the experience? I just love her music, which is like a mixture of classical, jazz, one of the tunes is a bit more radical jazz, but I completely love it!. 10 stars for this bright, young, talented artist.Bass and drum players play an excellent part and completely complement each other, and they don't seem to be very intrusive, like with some individual solos, which I like. After all, Hiromi is the star here. The DVD though shows some strange symptoms, I am not sure it was my Blue Ray LG player, music became at some point jittery it started with the 4th tune. I made a DVD copy and it seems to be running fine, so maybe the quality of the surface was not perfect.

Being there ... well almost
If you already know Hiromi then this is a must. If you don't, then there's no better way to become acquainted with her exceptional talent and vibrant charisma. It's almost received knowledge that jazz is always best seen live, after watching this concert nobody could possibly disagree with that. Hiromi is not only an extremely talented pianist , but her enthusiasm is as infectious as I've ever seen. It's tremendous to see how each of the trio interact with sheer pleasure. As has already been mentioned, there are a few minor blips with jumpiness on the actual footage. Although nothing that will seriously detract from your overall enjoyment of this highly engaging and exuberant performance. Simply buy this and enjoy. It's a concert par excellence and worth every penny spent.
