I had the uninformed idea that Stein and Toklas were antisemitic...Jews ...As it is they were adopted forperhaps payoffs by a Vichy official  (Ray)....who protected them from deportation and certain deathThey managed to survive and Stein's comment about being Jewish and Jews in general were cogentand worth reading...As far as Stein's literary output goes from the small amount I have read it can renderone comatose...Even Stein scholars have trouble finishing her booksHowever this book by the talented Janet Malcolm is worth reading for another chapter inFascist history  in France..and the evil of the Vichy government
