Another Marvelous Volume
Over time, my reviews of the Donald Duck dailies have become a little less glowing although I’ve never failed to give out five stars. The problem was that Bob Karp seemed to be neutering Donald more and more and my assumption was that this was dictated by Disney. In the late 30’s, early 40’s Donald was an absolute sociopath. He was a prankster with no sense of limits and a laundry list of personal flaws. In this current era, he is FAR from a model citizen but he does have some restraints and I found the tamer Donald less funny. There was also an issue with me simply being unable to get the punchline of many strips and this was happening more and more often.Through the first third of the book, it felt like the series was continuing to run out of gas and then something happened. It was like all the pieces fell into place. I often grade humorous comics on how many times they can make me laugh out loud and it’s not particularly easy to cause me to erupt spontaneously. If I get a handful of these moments in a book I’m happy and I literally lost count this time around. Here’s an example. Donald is standing outside a beauty salon while Daisy exits the building. With a completely innocent smile and evident good cheer Donald says, “Oh well, better luck next time!” In the final panel Donald is face down on the ground with stars and dizzy lines above his head. To me, this strip is perfection. The joke is simple and the execution is clean. If I had a drink in my mouth I probably would have done a spit take.In another strip, Donald is trying to get Louis to tell him what he learned at school that day. Louis is reluctant but when Donald angrily insists, Louis delivers a thundering uppercut to Donald’s jaw. As Donald lay on the ground, punch drunk, Louis explains that Ronny Tyler taught him the fast left hook. This is the kind of humor that could only work in the comic strip format. It sometimes feels like there is a disconnect between Karp’s jokes and Taliaferro’s art but when the two of them sync up it’s pure magic. For whatever reason IDW had a long gap between volume 4 and 5 but I am now reminded how well Karp and Taliaferro can work together. We’ve got a lot more years of the duo together so keep them rolling IDW.
