È un'opera enorme, estremamente ricca di contenuti e capace di coprire praticamente ogni grande area della Medicina Interna con un livello di approfondimento difficilmente paragonabile a quello di un normale manuale universitario. Quando si ha bisogno di approfondire un argomento o chiarire un aspetto specifico, avere Harrison a disposizione è davvero prezioso. Allo stesso tempo, però, secondo me bisogna essere consapevoli del tipo di libro che si sta acquistando. Personalmente non lo considero il testo più pratico su cui preparare integralmente un esame universitario. I volumi cartacei sono enormi, le pagine sono molto dense e la quantità di informazioni è tale che studiarlo sistematicamente dall'inizio alla fine può diventare poco efficiente per uno studente di Medicina. Durante l'università l'ho trovato infatti molto più utile come testo di riferimento: studiavo un determinato argomento e utilizzavo Harrison quando avevo bisogno di approfondire, integrare o comprendere meglio alcuni aspetti. In questo ruolo è veramente difficile chiedere di più. Credo inoltre che sia uno di quei libri il cui valore aumenti dopo la laurea. Da studente si ha spesso bisogno di testi più schematici e orientati alla preparazione degli esami; da medico, invece, diventa molto più interessante poter consultare rapidamente un'opera così completa quando si vuole approfondire una patologia, un problema clinico o un determinato argomento di Medicina Interna. Quindi sì, per me la fama di Harrison è meritata, ma lo acquisterei con le giuste aspettative: non necessariamente come manuale da imparare pagina per pagina, bensì come grande testo di riferimento da affiancare allo studio e continuare a consultare anche dopo l'università.
