Great insight to victorian life.
I chose this rating because I had the honour of meeting Asa Briggs at OU. He is quite a character and is just a mine of information as is this book. Anyone studying the victorians must read this book.

Classic book of British urban/social history
The book was an used copy but very pristine, without any marks or tears. It was delivered well before the promised deadline. It is a classic text of social/urban history. I am enjoying reading it. Very good value for money copy.

Must buy for every student
Briggs has managed to make studies of Victorian cities less boring with this book. Make no mistake, endless figures of populations and numbers of back-to-backs are still INCREDIBLY boring but there is is some great stuff in here. It is a must buy for anybody hoping to understand the Victorian world and the Melborne stuff was just delighful
